I'm thinking of going overseas to do some volunteer work, using my professional skills.

However, I've only been in my industry for 3 years, first job that pays more then I'd usually expect. If I want to volunteer, I'd have to quit.

Has anyone ever done it? Experiences? What should I consider other than financial reason?

I have no commitments, but just scared I'll come back to nothing.

Yes, I have done this (us peace corps). I think everyone should live abroad. Living abroad is totally different than traveling and being a visitor. The experience will cost you a lot financially if you figure the lost salary, but it will be priceless and worth much more than that money. Upon your return, many future employers will also view your experiences as very valuable, especially in terms of your adaptability, understanding of diversity, and problem-solving abilities, etc. There is no doubt you should do it. Be prepared to have your worldview turned upside down, and realize that you're not some "savior" swooping in to your host country; you will learn just as much (actually, probably more) than you will share/teach. But that's okay. The US needs lots of ambassadors who will build relationships with an open heart and mind. Take time selecting the right organization to sponsor you-- each will have pros and cons. Peace Corps has very good health benefits, security plans for evacuation, etc. but there are other really good options, as well. Good luck!

If you are going to volunteer overseas, you need to do it through an established organization that will be responsible for your safety, for getting you to a health care center for treatment, for getting in touch with your country's embassy if you are arrested, etc. Do NOT "do it yourself." Even if you are going to pay transporation and accommodation expenses yourself, you need to volunteer through an official organization -- the link I've provided is to a web page I created specifically for Westerners who want to volunteer overseas.

You will not "come back to nothing." Experience is experience, whether it is paid or volunteer. Having international experience, as well as experience in diverse communities, is HIGHLY desired in most any profession. You will come back to a lot MORE opportunities.

Spend some time in Prayer about the decision, I admire your devotion but if you are just getting started in your career you may not be ready for what lies ahead. As a Christian I can pray about the decision and know if it is the right one to make, if you are, the good Lord will show you the road you need to follow. Helping others who can never help you back is the greatest sacrifice we can make, You definitely have a good heart and I wish you the best!!!

It will change you...and only for the better. When you return, your entire list of priorities may very well be completely different than before you left.

There is so much more to this life than money. I encourage you to volunteer. You won't regret it for a minute.
