i am not pregnant but i want to get a rather large tattoo on the side of my torso that goes from my hip bone to just by my breast. I do plan on having a baby someday. How will pregnancy affect the tat? Since it's not on my stomach will it still strech? if it does, how will it look after i lose some baby weight?

people speaking from experience would be greatly appreciated!

I have a tattoo going down my side and wrapping around my stomache. Yes, it does stretch and it never looks the same. The skin stretches and when it elastisizes back to it origional form the ink fades and it also , since it is scar tissue, never can be colored to look the same. I would HIGHLY recommend that you wait till after you are done having babies then getting the tattoo unless you are not worried about the chances and aftermath.. which it sound like it would. Mine has been gone over and ever covered in parts and it never looked the same. I wish i would of waited... i have most of my body covered and my sides and stomache are regrets and I wish I would of waited. I do have tats on my feet and I get a zillion compliments on them and have them feature in magazines , tattoo magazine. think about a design there, mine are lilies that the vines wrap around my feet and ankle . good luck..

I'm not speaking from personal experience, but I do know people who've regretted similarly placed tats d/t them disfiguring during pregnancy.

On your side, it will not stretch in the same way as one on the stomach would; it will actually probably end up looking worse, because the stretch will be asymetrical. At least directly on the stomach, it would be even.

After you lose the baby weight, it will mostly recede back to a semblance of what it look like before. It will never look quite right, though, and how off it is will depend on how resilient your skin is. If you think you are likely to have much in the way of stretch marks, than I would say avoid that area. They will correspond pretty closely with each other.

Hm ... Maybe use a stretch mark reducing cream or lotion and see about getting touch ups done after the stretch marks are gone. Shae Butter lotions and Cocoa extracts are good. They heal the skin and in the process reduce the appearance of stretch marks for some people. If those don't work I think asking an artist about cover ups would be best so that they look clean again. Hope they go back to normal or you get it all worked out. Congrats on the baby!!!

Ok well to start with no mattter where you get a tat it is always going to stretch Whether your losing it or putting it on. Most of the time you cant really see the difference. But becuase of the place where your wishing to get it, there would be a HUGE chance of it stretching, i suggust you think long and hard because tattoos dont always look the way you want them too in 10/20/30 years time!

really there is no way to tell how your body will change during pregnancy. there are some lucky women who just grow a little belly when they're pregnant and when it's over they go right back to the way they were. and then there are the women who kindof expand all over and afterward it is a huge struggle to get back to where they were pre-pregnancy and many of them just give up on getting that old body back.
personally i am waiting until i have had kids before i get my ribcages tattooed. i already know EXACTLY what i want on both ribcages but i can't bear the thought of having a beautiful tattoo and then tadaaaa... after kids it looks all stretched out and disfigured. i'd prefer to wait. good luck on whatever you decide but i personally won't risk it.

i have a tattoo on my chest; i also have a five-year-old.

granted, i don't have a tattoo placed where you have yours, but the one i have did change a bit with my pregnancy. from friends who have also had children and who have ink, there wasn't too much change along the side. there was some stretching. with one friend whom is naturally very thin, everything went pretty much back into place after she had her little person - although she did need a bit of a color touch-up for obvious reason. now with Nees (who is a bit thicker like myself), her tattoo was all jacked up after her son. however, she did gain a large amount of weight during her pregnancy. i believe she is going into the shop soon to discuss touch-up vs. cover-up options with the artist.

i know that's not super-helpful. sorry!

there's a good chance you'll end up with at least one stretch mark running through it and messing it up. the good thing is a way down the road you can have it touched up after it/they fade

How do YOU think pregnancy will affect the tat?

How should we know what your tat is going to look like when you get pregnant.

There's so many variables . . .
