My mother is almost 83 years old. She had a tumor on her left thumb, had it removed and had a skin graft. It has been almost 5 weeks now and the doctor spoke of attaching her thumb to her belly for it to heal. she does not want that done. Should we get a second opinion if the doctor insistes of doing the attachment.

I would seek a second opinion anyways.

Furthermore, second doc or not, they can NOT force her to do this. She has to sign approval for every proceedure (or med power of attourney) and if she really doesnt want to attach her thumb to her belly, then she doesnt have to. Though I have to ask, are you sure they actually wanted to attach the thumb to the belly, or take belly skin to put on the thumb?

Sure you should get a second opinion. I have heard of this (attaching the hand, not just the thumb) it prevents movement of the hand to do repair and can supply extra blood circulation depending on how it is done.

This is a common practice,I know someone who had this done with his arm,it was the only way it would heal.
