im from mich. but i hunt in eastern ky.i usually go for a long weekend for rifle season.our property is 290 acres of wooded mountains and open field with alot of creeks.only going there once for the 4th of july for vacation, and then in nov for deer season doesnt give me any time to scout. so when im hunting its hit and miss. i use alot of scent killer but im still concerned about the wind..it seems like the wind kicks in different directions constantly..is this because of the mountains? or is there a specific way that wind blows over this kind of terrain? hunting michigan isnt nearly as complicated when it comes to wind conditions as it is there....

i grew up in southeastern KY and have hunted there since i was 6 yr old the only time you will find good steady direction of wind is down in a "holler" other than that its all over the place as you explained the best advise i can give you is find a "funnel" get a topo map. look up "deer funnel" on the net. it is complicated to explain but once you get gist you can figure it out. what county is it in it may be close to were i hunt i usually hunt 4-6 eastern counties maybe i can give you a better idea where to go. also DO NOT walk so much you sweat alot layer up so you can remove layers as you Begin to warm up not only will this make you more comfortable while not moving around it will make you stink less its alot harder to hunt Ky than many people thank but there are some bruisers down here I've killed 3 140" or better deer all out of eastern Ky you are more than welcome to email me if you need more info about the area you hunt

Swirling winds are always a problem while hunting. If the wind is in a steady direction it's easy to set up down-wind from where from where you think the deer will be. With wind that's changing directions scent control is important. Also remember the thermal air currents. In the mornings when it begins to get warm the air currents will be moving up (hot air rises) and in the evenings as it cools down the thermals will be going down. Wash your clothes and take a shower in scent free soap. Even your deodorant should be unscented. Many companies make sprays to help mask odor. You can never be totally scent free but you can keep your scent to a minimum. If you know where the bedding areas are try to hunt between them and the feeding areas. Deer are like people. They will usually use the easiest route from place. If you can find where two or more trails intersect it would be a good place to hunt. Natural funnels like saddles between the peaks are good places to hunt in mountainous terrain. Near the fields you can find staging areas. Places where the deer wait till dark to head into the field. As dry as it's been this year you should also look for places where the deer have been coming to the creeks to drink. Good luck deer hunting.

Air & wind currents are unpredictable, however if you Hunt from a tree or tree stand it should improve your chances considerably.*
