I am currently in the military and I personally would not want to fight along side some one who does not want to be in it. I think having everyone do some kind of public service would be a good idea. Maybe having people go to basic training. That way in the in the unlikely event that the volunteer force became insufficient for the nation's defense people would be better prepared and a draft could be initiated.

You don't have a clue. Oh well, that's no problem. That's why you asked the question, right?
Avoiding the draft was quite easy. All you had to do was be enrolled in college. This has been a rule throughout most of America's history. After all, the military needs officers. Take a look at how much money an Admiral or a General makes. I wouldn't call them poor.
As for the poor dying, no one made them enlist.
As for "This girl", I guess you know nothing about how Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, and other Hollywood types, put their careers on hold so they can go off to fight. when Elvis was drafted, he went.

Its sounds like it should work, doesn't it? What has happened in the past was that rich parents would use their influence to "defer" the draft or else secure cushy assignments like the National Guard (which previously did not deploy outside the US) and poor kids still got the shaft.
BTW, did you know that Mel Gibson's dad moved the family to Australia so his sons would not get drafted? True story.

I served during the days of the draft as well as the days of the all-volunteer force. The present system is far and above the best for our nation. Draftees generally do not make good troops.

Drafting is not a good idea unless there is no other alternative. I would not want somebody watching my husband's back that was there begrudgingly and was too distracted by their resentment to focus on their job. A draft is a tough call and I hope is one that can be avoided.

Drafts are a horrible way to raise armies. Using WW-I and WW-II as baselines, a volunteer force is equal to 15 times its numbers in draftees.
Slave armies suck.
Our all volunteer force is the finest the world has seen and there is no need to water it down with grumpy draftees with bad attitudes.

My son is on his thanks to his 0.33 excursion in Iraq. we are comfortable, no longer rich, yet he has different concepts. He feels that's his duty to serve and he does nicely contained in the military. human beings felt Pat Tillman changed into stupid to offer up a NFL contract to safeguard his united states. yet he really felt forced to grant his existence for his united states, even to the superb sacrifice. i don't have self assurance that's continuously an economic determination. yet they're all heroes regardless.

Why force people who don't want to fight to go to war? If they're being sent against their will I doubt they're going to be very good soldiers. I hope the draft never has to be re-instated, but if it does then why not include women in it too? What makes a man's life less valuable than a woman's?

Studies have shown that a person willing to fight for their country on a volunteer basis has higher motivation than those who just got pulled off the street.
As a squad leader, you need to know that each and everyone on your team will pull through. If you got some piece of s*** unwilling to do as they are told or just slack off because they don't want to be there, will jeopardize their entire squad.
Draft - It's just a bad bad bad idea.

I think the draft should come back. I personally did my time and everyone I talk to either doesn't appreciate it or doesn't care. If everyone does it, then everyone will know how bad/great it was.
