The simplest way to describe the difference between them is that a psychologist primarily aids the depressed patient by counseling and psychotherapy. A psychiatrist may also perform psychotherapy; but, in addition, can prescribe medications and perform ECT (electroconvulsive therapy). A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. A psychologist may hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) and be called "doctor"; but, is not a medical doctor (M.D.).

A psychologist cannot prescribe drugs, but both can do counseling. Also, a psychiatrist is an MD while a psychologist is a Ph.D.

Psychiatry deals with mental problems such as being bi-polar or manic-depressive, scizophrenia, split personalities, depression, anxiety disorders, and so on. They generally prescribe medications to help people deal with these problems.
Psychology deals with behavorial problems and addictive behaviors. They use all kinds of things, from hypnosis to behavior modification techniques, and possibly medications as well. The main focus of psychology is problematic behavior and how to change it or remove it from the person's life.
Hope this helps.
