It is a gift of the Holy Spirit....This gift is used in more than one way.....On the day of pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon those in the upper room....they all spoke in tongues and people standing around heard them preach the gospel in their language......At other times they spoke as the spirit gave them utterances. It is used to edify self and the church. In the church there must be one interpreting what is said.....When using it for self just between you and God there does not have to be an interpreter.
Some churches use it to show you have received the Holy Spirit......But not all people receive the gift as I understand.....It is called the language of the angels....God understands you but no man does unless he is interpreting.....
If God's blessings are on it but I don't knock it....It may seem foolish to some people but God said I take foolish things to confound the wise, those that walk in their own wisdom and not God's.

I don't know what the different branches * 1st baptist or 2nd* are but I was told that baptist do not believe in speaking in tongues. Speaking in tongues means to be filled with the holy ghost or holy spirit as some people call it. It is the 3rd part of the Holy Trinity that All Christians believe in.
1. God the Father * God*
2. God the Son *jesus*
3 Holy Ghost/Spirit * speaking in tongue*
it completes the trinity and essentially your soul. Speaking in tongues is just the Holy Language and signifies the presents of the Lord. Now the just because you are Baptist doesn't mean you cannot be filled with the Holy Ghost.
As far as I know, they celebrate all national holidays including Halloween.

I am a Baptist as well. We celebrate Christmas, Easter. Some celebrate them different. Halloween is one most do not celebrate, but some take their kids to some churches that give out candy, and some maybe even the old fashion way. Though I do not approve of it, but that is between God and that person. Tongues is a language. Acts 1,2 will show that. Plus look up the word tongues. I know in the KJV that the word unknown is used before tongues. Unknown was because it was unknown to them. But anytime you look it up you will find it is just a language, such as Spanish, French. As far as what kind of dancing? If you mean like going to bars and such to dance. Well I can only quote you scripture but best way is to search this out for your self.
1 Thessalonians 5:22-Abstain from all appearances of evil.
Pray all things out, that God will give you wisdom to know what is right.

Speaking in tongues is the speaking in a language hasn't learned before. It's straight from God. Its direct communication between you/god. It comes as the spirit gives the utterance. It is called the comforter. It will make you feel as if a weight has been lifted off you, Joy unspeakable/full of joy. It will make you a bold witness for God.But, most of all, its the birth of the spirit. It is what puts us in the family of God. After we repent we're an empty vessel ready to be filled. So, we pray and get the H.G. God's spirit takes that place.I've never known a Baptist to believe in it. See Acts 2:38 for yourself please. The ones I know have backed off Halloween in the last 10-15 yrs but do all the rest. When I was young they were all over Halloween, too. They aren't into dancing, of any sort, as far as I know.

I am a baptist in Northern Michigan. We don not believe in speaking in tongues. We do celebrate the Holidays. Christmas Christ birth, Easter The Resurrection of Christ, and all the rest. Halloween is not celebrated although we do have a Harvest Party for the little ones but we do not go out trick or treating. We do give out candy as ling as it does not fall on a church night. But this too is mainly personal preference. no one at my church would look down on some one for going out on Halloween.

Tongues was a miraculous event that happened on the day of Pentecost.Tongues also ended there.
You need to be disciple by a sound minister
of a scriptural Baptist church. Some are not
scriptural sound.Sound doctrine needs to be
learned.
Some pagan holidays are celebrated by so-called Baptist, but the learned ones know better.

Speaking in tongues is simply a spiritual gift from the Holy Spirit. Not every believer has it. It is direct communication with God via the Holy Spirit. It is meant, like all spiritual gifts, to glorify God...they are like power tools in our toolbox of things to glorify God. Speaking in tongues, however, edifies no one unless someone who can interpret what was said does so. In my experience, very few people possess this gift.
As far as celebrating holidays...not much different than other Christians...Christmas, Easter, etc. Of course, there are other church events that are observed like baptism and communion.
