What is the connection between Siddhartha losing his friend Govinda to Gautama and Siddhartha's "awakening”? What does it mean that "the awakening man was on the way to himself" (p. 37)?

In order to be awakened and find life's true meaning, Siddhartha had to be free of other opinions. He had to know what it feels like to lose a friend and go through a healing process. "The awakening man was on the way to himself" because he was on a journey to find himself. He could not find himself when he had someone else there influencing him, becuase Govinda and Siddhartha had different opinions.

I read this for senior class in high school. From what I recall, Govinda stays with Gautama, whom has achieved nirvana and is enlightened, in hopes of becoming enlightened himself. Siddhartha goes away because (it's a bit fuzzy here) he doesn't believe Gautama is the way to enlightenment, but he must do it on his own. He gets taught the art of love by Kamala, makes money but doesn't care.
I wish I could find my copy, I wrote in notes, I don't remember that part.

Siddhartha is a story of the Buddha as told by a Western writer, Herman Hess, it is just a story.

To realize yourself you must forget yourself. By waking up you come to the awareness of who you really are. But try and grasp or own that awareness you push the real you away.

If you see the Buddha on the road, kill him.

lol - sorry i can't remember this Hessian classic but the awakening man is ALWAYS on the way to himself. enlightenment is becoming who you really are, that's 'all' (read rowan's the reality game' if you want a more step-by-step account of how to get there - it's spiritual in it's content but it is actually the most pragmatic instruction manual for humanistic and transpersonal work i've ever seen)

He was waking up to his higher or deeper Self.
The sense of loss at losing his friend awakened his sense of love and life and emotions.
