Be careful what Over the counter drugs you take with prescribed med's.
lithium and diphenhydrAMINE (Benadryl)
MONITOR: Central nervous system- and/or respiratory-depressant effects may be additively or synergistically increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients.
MANAGEMENT: During concomitant use of these drugs, patients should be monitored for potentially excessive or prolonged CNS and respiratory depression. Ambulatory patients should be counseled to avoid hazardous activities requiring complete mental alertness and motor coordination until they know how these agents affect them, and to notify their physician if they experience excessive or prolonged CNS effects that interfere with their normal activities.
Do not take Benadryl if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. A very dangerous drug interaction could occur, leading to serious side effects.
Talk to your pharmacist before taking other over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, or insomnia medications. These products may contain medicines similar to Benadryl, which could lead to an antihistamine overdose.
Before taking Benadryl, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
anxiety or sleep medicines such as alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), temazepam (Restoril), or triazolam (Halcion);
medications for depression such as amitriptyline (Elavil), doxepin (Sinequan), nortriptyline (Pamelor), fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), or paroxetine (Paxil); or
any other medications that make you feel drowsy, sleepy, or relaxed.
Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Benadryl.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist what you should do. You don't want to risk cross over effects from mixing incompatible substances. Even OTC meds and natural ingredients can mix badly with your prescriptions to make them ineffective or dangerous. Your well being isn't worth taking a chance.

benadryl is usually safe to take, but the xanax should already be helping you sleep

Benadryl does work. But maybe take it to the pharmacist and ask him if it would be okay to take with your other meds. Or you could ask him what else you could take.

I think you'd better ask a pharmacist about that one. Mixing drugs is dangerous. Be sure you know what you are doing. Call a pharmacy - they are always glad to help.

Ask your doctor. If he or she says Benadryl, then go for it. Otherwise, don't take a non professional's word for it.
