Some airlines require minors to fly direct. Others allow connections. The fact that there are other connecting flights that same day is mostly irrelevant. True, if the connection is missed, it's better that there's a later flight. If possible, use an airline that offers a direct flight. I don't know where in California, but JetBlue is one airline that offers good prices and direct flights between points in California and NYC. Not sure their policy on minors, however, but I believe they allow them. I don't know your kids, but 15 years olds might not need the same sort of hand-holding as a smaller child.
