How much it hurts depends greatly on where you're getting it, how talented your tattoo artist is, and how sensitive your body is in various areas.
I am up to four tats now, and I thought the backside of my shoulder hurt the worst. That one to me felt like continuous ear-piercing mixed with sandpaper. I think some of that had to do with the guy being not as good as his reputation, but I can't say for sure.
I can say for sure that you should do heavy research before choosing your artist, though.
I got the front side of my shoulders (both), with another two artists, and they were more pleasant. They both felt less painful than the inital sting of an earring. It was more or less like a constant pressure with an occasional sting. The fact that I got both of these more or less equal tats with different artists is why I know that their talent plays a significant role in how it feels. Same size, similar detail, and same placement on opposite shoulders, yet one of them I barely felt at all.
The last one I have is the "*****" tat; lower back. It is called this in part because the supposedly weaker female sex is more able to handle the minor pain of the area. If it is your first, I might suggest that area, because it is as relatively dull as it is reported. If your father is with you, you also should be safe from any perving ideas the tattooist might have.
Good luck.

I have 3 tattoos and they only hurt a little but everybody is different. Sounds like you have a low tolerance for pain. It's nothing like getting your ears pierced. You should definately get the tattoo on your hip and make sure it's something you will love. You're very young and one that is so visible as on your wrist would not be a good idea right now. Be brave....the anticipation is always worse than the actual event!

Tattoos hurt. I know, because I have one. Mine's quite larger than a turtle, though. I personally found the pain exhilerating, and it wasn't too bad for me. I differs with everyone. If you're only fifteen- turning sixteen, don't...under any circumstances, get a tattoo on your wrist. Your hip is a better idea, because it's discrete. You won't want a turtle on your wrist in two years. I'm sure of it.
It is nothing like getting your ears pierced. Nothing at all.
It feels like a cat scratching you repeatedly in one area. It stings, and if you don't have a high tolerance for pain, I'd suggest waiting until you're a bit older to get a tattoo.

Not at all like getting ears pierced. It feels kind of like having the very tip of a stick pin (or 3 or so stick pins, depending if it is the outline or the color) being dragged through your skin, with some vibration. Just the very tip of it, but yes it hurts. Don't mean to scare you. I have 5 and I love them but - it hurts.

any tat u get that is on a bone will hurt more......wrist, hip, lower back in middle......cushy areas hurt less.....stomach, butt........i got ym lower back done......it was fine on the outside, but once it went across the middle ssection (over my spine and bone) it hurt A LOT......it basically feels like a stinging needle over and over again.....once the tat is done however, it doesn't hurt......it only hurts when ur getting the ink put on your body with the needle!! I felt dizzy afterwards....so i suggest u bring a soda with u or something to eat......my pain subsided from there and i was fine and i totally LOVE my tattoo!! Best of luck girl!! =o)

I wouldn't get one on my wrist at 16. When you truly decide what you want to do for a living, maybe. Otherwise, you may be sticking yourself with wearing long sleeves forever at work.
I'd say the pain is more like someone taking their fingernail and scratching, scratching, scratching the same place over and over and over. I don't think it is usually particularly PAINFUL, more annoying. Avoid bony areas, they tend to be more uncomfortable than fleshy areas.
Wait until you know exactly what you want before you get it. I like to draw on myself with sharpies, or wear a fake tattoo for a few weeks, just to make sure I liked the placement before I commit.

Some good answers here.
What you also have to think about is AFTER the ink. It will burn like a sunburn for about 4 days or so.
If you DO go get one (I think your not old enough), make sure you follow ALL instructions given to you.
