The woman's dress is always a full dress which fits over a long-sleeved blouse and full-length slips. An apron is then fitted over the dress and the "poyas" (belt) is tied around the waist. Unmarried women wear their hair in a braid down the back, married women use two braids and scarves. The total garment is known as a "sarafan," and is usually very brightly colored when colorful fabrics are available. The main items of religious significance are the poyas and the cross on a chain or thong around the neck. These symbolize the bond between our bearers and Christ. The other articles of dress are determined by a combination of religious doctrines and nonsecular custom. Women, for instance, are never permitted to cut their hair. They also are never to show their arms above the wrists nor their legs above the calf in public, nor any other part of their bodies; thus, the full skirts.

The men traditionally wear a "rubashka," which is a tunic-like shirt which often has embroidery down the front and a high round collar reminiscent of the clerical collar found in the United States and Europe. The rubashka in with the poyas, and also wear a cross on a chain tucked inside the shirt. The only other aspect of the men's appearance which is dictated by custom or religious is their hair and beard. The hair is usually cut short in back and on the sides with a fringe of longer hair around the temples and front. The beard is uncut and grows to whatever length is natural for it to do.

While that picture certainly looks "modest" the idea of modest Christian dress has more to do with 1. not wearing clothes that are designed to incite lustful thoughts in another person, and 2. that are not designed to show that an extravagent amount of money has been spent on them.

Contrary to your stiff-necked claims, Russian Old Believer LOCAL CUSTOM is not the only correct way for Christians to dress. It is only one of many ways that would be acceptable. Christ was not born in the hinterland of Siberia, nor did He come into the world speaking Church Slavonic.

According to St. Paul, nothing should be done which appears as evil.
Therefore dress inoffensively to the audience, whilst remaining chaste, except in marriage, is the logical conclusion for religious minded.
god bless.

What you write "oversteps" the teachings of the Bible.
Christians are supposed to be "modest" in dress, speech, lifestyle. But to make such restrictions, as you've described, is to be like the Pharisee of Jesus day.
The commandments of God "are not burdensome" but the yoke of man is.

That was centuries ago. Dress styles change with time. To hold someone to these traditions is legalistic at best. The Word of the Bible does not change, but clothing styles do. The Holy Spirit will guide you into what you should or should not wear. But it was very interesting to read. I love history. <><

True Christian, are those called by God the Father, they don't use cross es or objects, these are idols and are not used by true Christians. you fine true Christians dress normally as every one else does. The men do not wear their hair long, and the woman have long hair and don't cut it, for woman's hair is a beauty to them.
Most of the customs you talked about, are man made.

I prefer to dress modestly. That is my choice, and when I go to Church I dress as if I am going to worship a Holy God. How another person dresses is up to them. I have been offended by young men with 6" of butt crack showing at Church.

American Christians have no dress code.
I went to church, a Baptist church, with khakis and a polo shirt....I looked out of place because the men wore suits.
I went to another church, a Congregational, with a pair of jeans. I looked out of place because everyone had khakis and polo shirts!
Most of the women at church wear dresses. There are no prohibitions against looking pretty.

There's a passage in the Bible that mirrors this topic. It states that you shouldn't argue who eats what because" it is not what you eat that defiles your spiritual body."
In the same way, dressing appropriately is ideally the same thing. You should not dress sinfully, such as a sluttish, skimpy manner, but one that honors God.
Ask yourself, am I wearing this to honor God, or to attract attention?
Best of luck!
