I was thinking about buying a blue ray disc player but I still only have a standard tv and I was wondering if it still looks as good on a standard tv. Does it matter what type of tv it is?

Heck yes.

A standard TV can only display standard def video. The same one they created in 1940.

There will be no benefit to using a up-converting player, BlueRay , or HD-DVD.

You need a HDTV to see the 3-5 times improved video.

If you have decided on BluRay - consider getting a PS3. It's not that much more money, you get a game system, and the PS3 is actually the best BluRay player available. All the magazines compare stand-alone players to the PS3 and none have matched it for speed and quality. (Those 3 Cell processors in the box make all the difference).

With this - you will have a game system, a DVD player, and are ready when you get the HDTV in the future.
