Legally, the airline cannot tell you if he is onboard or not. What you CAN ask is, has his reservation changed at all? If he missed a flight and was rebooked on another, the information could be provided. If there is no change, you can assume he made the flight.

It is confidential information and most airline will not disclose any info on their pax. However, in the airline I used to work for, if someone called and had the surname AND the booking reference (not the flight number, the booking reference) then we would tell the caller not if the pax was on board but whether he was no show or not (which is the same in the end). also I guess your dad would have been in touch by now if he had missed the plan wouldn't he?

Actually yes you can... but there will be some hassles that you'll have to go through in order to 'get there' to speak with the right person.
Calling up the airport authorities will be the first step, and ask them to put you through the airline company that your dad is supposed to be on board (in other words, you can also call up the airline company's operation center).
Refer to the flight your dad was supposed to be on board and check on the status of the flight with them, including your dad's supposed time of departure (you need not refer to your dad's name, just the flight will do, and they will usually give you a hint along the way).
On certain circumstances some airline companies would be doing the job for you by going down to the departure hall or to communicate with other staffs there to verify their passenger status (tell them that your dad got certain conditions that needs attention, etc. ---it always WORK this way).
Good luck!

i've got worked for American airlines for 2 a protracted time in sales and we've never practiced such ticketing because i've got been working there. i'm able to confirm it being achievable whilst American purely had a flight from NYC ORD DFW LAX MIA yet after the develop of the Airline, heavy flying site visitors, and of direction protection there become no way we could proceed this way of ticketing. exciting, i might prefer to confirm that action picture!

nope. they wont tell you a thing. its confidential. I think the best way to find out if your dad got on his next flight or not is to send him an email or give him a call.
