it's hurtful to the one you are talking about, and brings out the worst in people, it takes a bigger person to not gossip. it becomes habitual and then you tend to spend all your time discussing others problems and downfalls and not taking a look in the mirror at your own flaws. it can start to consume some people, i know a few, and thats the only kind of conversation they understand, is puting down on others, just because they don't like them, or they are jealous, etc. many problems can arise from gossip.

It's like this: Most people who just can't seem to wait to talk smack about someone, will also jump at the chance to talk smack about YOU when you aren't around. So gossipers really show their character the moment they decide to jump on a person's (real or imagined) weaknesses.

Talk also has a way of spreading. What if it got back to the person you were talking about? Would they really find your words all that flattering? Unless your part was telling the gossiper that you didn't appreciate them talking about said subject, you wind up just as guilty. Is it really so fun, being a part of a group, that it's worth hurting someone else's feelings?

The main thing is that it can hurt a person. I don't like to gossip, BUT, I have one mean boss. So when he's not around me & the girls talk about him. If he knew what we were saying about him(all truths) he mite feel uncomfortable, then again he's so mean he could probably care less. But I would hate to hurt innocent people.

It is a sin against charity.you can damage the good reputation irrepairably of someone who does not deserve it. Once it's said, it can't be unsaid. It does not lend itself to the developement of good moral character for the gossiper. It can become addictive, and therefore can impair the gossipers ability to properly excercise his free will. He can become a slave to it.

Provebs 6
16These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

17A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

18An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

19A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Proverbs 12:19
The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment

Proverbs 26:28
A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

Proverbs 29:20

20Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

Leviticus 19

16Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour; I am the LORD

1 Timothy 5:13

13And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

James 3
13Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell

there are lots of dangers of gossip!! trust me i no most gossip leads in to rumors and then into fights...if i were you i would think about what you say before you say it and if you think it will cause the person you are talking about to blush then you are sheding inisent blood and that is a sin...

It is very hurtful and harmful....

ie...The house fire in NC last weekend that Killed those 6 college students.... several were from my area and one went to my church. A co-worker was reading a list of people that did not make it out alive. And this girls name was on that list. I seriously flipped. I called the church office to verify the story and come to fnd out she just has sever burns on her feet and is resting well. It took me hours to calm down from that. I made sure that rumor was cleared up.

It is not Christ like.We should minister to us in a loving way and stop the gossip. One might keep lies alive and make them grow.
