It all depends on how many withholding allowances you claim on the W-4 form your employer gave you to fill out. If you want to have the maximum withheld, claim 0, the minimum, claim 99. The more you claim, going up from 0, the less will be withheld. In the past I have claimed up to 10.
Your employer is required to withhold income tax from your wages as if you are single with zero allowances if you do not submit a Form W-4.

figure federal income tax, is gonna be about 25%, which includes FICA and Social Security taxes. If ;that is all you make in NYC, you may want to look for a second job.

i believe that means you are making 2400 a month and times 12 is 28,800 a year. That would put you in a 30% categories of taxes to be taken out. if this is not trues, please ask your company or vall the IRS and find out from them what the percentage rate of taxes you are in making 28,800 a year.
