In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

God wasn't doing it to prove a point in a selfish way. God let the Devil has his way with Job because Job gave up on God. I suggest reading the story of Job and then think on it.

Read Job; God wanted to test Job for what he really was. He used Job's life to show everyone his story of how we should trust God no matter what and that he will deliver us from our pain.
I can see what you're saying; why would God want to harm poor Job, this blameless man, to just "prove a point." The fact is, Job was the only one because of his character and God did prove a point; it just wasn't selfish. It was recorded in the Bible, the most popular book in the world, and in a sense Job's life was fulfilled by teaching everyone what God wanted to teach to us.
God will make us go through hardship, but he will reward us in the end. Always remember, "Follow the way of the Lord, and he will direct your path."
Best of Luck!

God had a job for Job and He knew that the devil would intervene with Job and do his job so really the job that was done on Job was done because the devil had a job to do on Job! Not a very good job done though!

Well satan made an accusation about Job......saying if the protection and blessings were taken away, Job would turn away. God allowed it because he knew Job would pass the test and his faith would bring him out as gold. It sounds awful but ultimately.......Job is the example for all of us of trusting God no matter what no matter how bad it looked. And he was given double for his trouble. All I can say is Like Jesus, God knew Job Could handle it. The necessity is in God being able to say "yes you can resist temptation, look at Job".......:)

Satan's always accusing people falsely; he made a bid for Peter but Jesus prayed for Peter to be strong and not cower.
God knew Job was faithful and in order to show that Job was commited to God, Job had to go thru this test. Satan did not get to destroy Job; Job was faithful to God.
Job needed to become stronger spiritually though bec. he carried around fear that his kids would sin; overcoming this trial strengthened Job's relationship with God.
God gave Job twice what he had before. And Job stopped being afraid his kids would sin.

The story of Job is a moralistic fantasy written by Bible writers to scare you into complete obedience and grab your attention. Yahweh was a merciless, vengeful Lord who had His way with anyone He wished. Too painful for modern folk and the New Testament smoothed God out into a kind and loving spirit. All of it is hogwash anyway so why worry about it?

1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
Man could have everything or nothing and still believe in God…this is a question of faith and the love of God…Job understood his life on earth wasn’t eternal, that his things on earth wouldn’t last, but his God would always be with him.
Job was very faithful!
Job 1:20
Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, 21And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
22In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

No. It was to demonstrate how we can, through faith, handle and not succumb to the very worst struggles the devil puts us through! An inspiring story was manifested through the trials and tribulations that Job endured and was victorious!!!
