Have you ever heard of The Secret? Basically if you want something bad enough you can manifest it through your thoughts and actions. Prayer is simply a religious method to manifest your wishes... and it does work. The religious aspect is optional.

Because those who pray with a humble, reverent heart do have their prayers answered. So for someone on the outside looking in, you wouldn't understand and therefore are not in a position to validate whether prayer works or not.

If you don't believe in God, why would you pray to empty space? Are you testing your non-belief?
God may not answer your prayer because he knows the motive behind it (to prove or disprove his existence). You must believe in him and pray with sincerity.
In my experience, God does exist, and he does answer prayer -- but not always the way I would like!

First of all, pray does work, just not always. Remember, in the Bible, it says that before you ask God, you must really believe he will do it. If you doubt him, he will not. Also, you must remember to come to him humbly and in gratitude. If you don't, God may turn his ear from you.
However, sometimes you do follow that. Plenty of righteous ppl have prayed and prayed and found no answer. Read the book of Job; he was stripped of everything in his life, and when he prayed, it felt like God was ignoring him.
You must remember to be patient and ALWAYS have BELIEF that God will follow through for you! Do not doubt him, and always remember who he is. WHO HE IS! The god of the universe is listening to you, you just have to be patient. And don't doubt!
Best of LUCK! (Read Psalms for accounts of feeling like prayer doesn't work)

To answer your subtext:
God looks at your heart to see how genuine your petition really is...
He hears you everytime...
If it lines up with His will, you will see the fruits of your prayer. There are times when He responds to your concerns only expressed in the subconscious realm... stuff you may never see or know about.
To acknowledge His existence as God allows Him to do good works for you whether you ask Him or not.

Belief is a requirement and so if you don't believe, well, then your prayer won't be very effective.
*One thought to mention, God can answer a prayer with no, He does not always say yes. That is why we say Your will be done.

Why do you think you He didnt answer you?
God bless
EDIT: you dont have to believe in Him for Him to hear u....you just have to believe in Him so you can hear Him answer you....otherwise you may think it was someone other than Him that answered. be open-minded towards Him is a good start. what i find insane is the amount of abuse we hurl at each other in His Name.

Because of the laws of probability. Also, when their prayers don't come true it is considered "Gods plan".
