You can't play import PS2 games or DVDs (blu ray is different though) on a PS3.

There are no mods for the PS3, and American PS3's cannot play japanese PS2 games. Though PS3's can play any PS3 games from anywhere without any modification.

Nope. The PS3 is area-locked. it is merely that PS3 video games aren't to any extent further area coded. PS2 video games, PS1 video games, DVDs, and Blu-Ray videos are area-coded and hence are restricted to thier personal area on PS3.

Only PS3 games are region free. PS1/PS2 games and movies aren't. Nothing could be done with this.
US playstations are in NTSC U/C region.
Japanese playstations are in NTSC J region.
