I'm not really religious, and I have a "I guess I'll find out once i happens!" kind of attitude about it.
All I can picture is just blackness. Forever. But then I think about it and you wouldn't really be aware of it, would you? Since when you die so does your consciousness.
I know I want to die peacefully, in my sleep.
The thing that scares me most, which is really weird, is just not breathing anymore. You just stop. It freaks me out.
And being humans we are naturally curious about everything. We try to find out everything. But what happens to us after death isn't known until after we die, which is why it's so scary to most people.
But I'm young and I'm going to enjoy my life and not worry about that until I get older, and by then I'll be able to accept what is going to happen to me
**Why did everyone get so many thumbs down?? I believe my answer and other peoples answers are valid and all deserving of consideration.

OK this is a tough one to get into and answer. first what i tell you is what i believe. as a Catholic you are taught to read the Bible but it is not the final authority. the priests are. well i don't believe that i believe the Bible is the final authority. not some priest,Reverend, pastor, Rabbi or any other person. the Bible has been around since Christ and if you believe it then you will know there is a Heaven an a Hell. you have to read it. you Will also have to know that John 3:16 tells it all about eternal life and read further in that passage because it tells you the Jesus is the only way to heaven not rosaries, penitence, good deeds, money, living a good life, doing things for others. you have to accept the gift of what God has given. there is a Heaven and Hell weather or not you believe in it does not change that fact. to get your answers read the Bible I could tell you people to go to and talk with but that would be pushing a religion on you. Get the answers from the Source. The Bible. Pray and ask God to open your mind so you can understand what it says. when you get your answer pm or email me and let me know i would be very interested in how you made out.

Consciousness survives. There's a guy named Pim van Lommel who studied cases where people died and were brought back. He found that they could remember things that happened while their hearts were stopped and there was no brain activity. Consciousness is non-local. It exists when there is no brain activity. You can find an article about him and his findings on the ODE magazine site.
Do some research about children born with memories of other lives. I remember seeing one book where some actually had birthmarks that looked like what they died from - a scar where the old body was shot, ridges around their necks that look like rope marks if they were hanged or strangled.
There's a lot more to learn on this subject - don't believe the people who think there's nothing there. There's too much evidence to the contrary.
Check out Allison DuBois' book Don't Kiss Them Goodbye. She's a reputable psychic that works with the police and she talks a great deal about life after death. There is more, though it doesn't fit the firey torture chamber vs. kingdom of gold imagery you hear in church. It's much more personal than that, and not nearly as scary.
Blessings~

I'm not sure what happens when someone dies. My husband died after we had only been married a year and a half (he was 32 yrs old) and what I eventually concluded was that the concept is death is pretty much unimaginable to the human mind (at least mine), kind of like infinity is unimaginable. It is a real thing but we just can't really grasp exactly what infinity would look like.
I have no strong faith ties that explain death to me or where one goes after death and whether consciousness of spirit remains after death. However, I do know this as fact:
When a body dies, it returns to the earth and becomes part of the living soil. That soil is used to sustain many other forms of life. When we die, we do live on in many ways biologically, just in other forms. For some reason, this thought gives me great comfort because if there is nothing else, there is that. It gives me comfort to go outside and feel my lost one living on in everything around me and at least in that sense I know for certain that he is still here.

The spirit imhabit the body, but is free to leave at times. If you pay attention to your dreams, you will find that your spirit feel like it leaves the body at times. I believe in the spiritual realm, that the body can go to when asleep, and also when you die. I believe the spirit will continuely return to a body, a new one when you die. I believe this, because I train myself to have strong spiritual senses and intuition, through meditation, mind-body exercises, a healthy diet, and not over indulging. I train close to the edge, meaning extremely hard, so I feel I know the spiritual better than almost everyone. This is based on the principle, that what you put into something, is what you get out of it.

100% u will rot were u lay or unless u r cremated but your soul lives on, depending on what kinda of life u lead, and choices u make we be your final resting place..I can not see there being only one religon that one has to be to go to heaven or hell, some may call it other places and thats fine, I think most faiths want u to treat others as you would like to be treated...but facts are facts and u can spend the very most for a casket made from bronze or copper but,,are body's r made up of 75%water just like the earth, so if you weighed 100lbs at the end of rot/decay you'll be 25lbs of bones...thats for sure..your own beliefs come from with in..all this just didn't happen I am sure of that, I didn't come from a ape, I dont think a big bang created this, or may thats the way the gods did it...

No matter what anyone tells you, what you believe is what is true for you. Scientists can come up with 1,000 theories, but none of us can really know for sure. Being that you are catholic I'm sure you've heard their version of what happens after someone passes away. There are also similar beliefs held by buddhists, muslims, protestants, christians, and most other religions. Personally, I would spend more time remembering my sister and living life than worrying about what will happen later.
It's out of your hands anyhow

When someone dies, their physical body will decay and rot unless it has been cremated.
However that should not concern you. What should concern you is what will happen to your spirit, your soul, the real you.
All I can tell you is that when I asked the Lord Jesus, the Son of God,to forgive me for all the bad things I had done in my life, He did forgive me and He gave me eternal life as a gift. So I now know that when I die, my spirit will go to be with Him.
You say that no-one will know from experience. Well I know two people who did,one was called Jim Sepulvada and the other is called Joy Dawson. They both died, went to heaven and came back from the dead to tell other people, like me, what to expect!

It is so sad that your chosen religion has left you in such darkness.
The Bible makes things very clear.
The condition of the dead is outlined at Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10.
Psalm 146:4 adds to that.
Please note that Genesis 3:19 says Adam would return to the ground.
When we die, we return to the ground .....we are bio-degradable.
Oh yes! That includes the soul.
It dies .....Ezekial 18:4.
Jesus likened death to sleep. John 11:11-14.
So, we die and 'TEMPORARILY' that's it!
However, there is something called 'the resurrection'.
As Jesus gave back life to Lazarus, so the dead will be given back their life.
Re-created. Re-made.
At the appointed time.
They will be part of Psalm 37:29.
If you don't look up those scriptures, you're more interested in the question than the answer.

Based on NDE (Near-Death Experiences), when you die you will leave your body. You will see yourself and may not be aware that you have passed. You will initially feel quite normal and be confusd by seeing yourself and realizing that you are not in your body.
Next you will experience a tunnel which has a clear light at the end. Move toward the light. If you see dark figures on the sides, simply ignore them and keep going.
Some one may approach you from the light and tell you to go back, it is not your time to go.
The light is actually the end of the tunnel where you will arrive at your destination. Most people who have gotten close, before being sent back, describe a spiritual figure waiting to receive them into a tranquil world of their highest expectations and spiritual beliefs.
Many believe that atheists, who expect nothing, will in fact get nothing, exactly what they believe and expect - a black tunnel.

Well, your physical body will rot and return to dust. But, everyone has an eternal spirit. Whether you accept a relationship with Christ determines if you spend it with God in heaven, or separated from God in Hell. As soon as you die your spirit is in its eternal home. When Christ returns to earth the spirits in heaven will meet with perfected bodies like those they were born with and the great white throne judgement will take place (this is when the rapture will occur and the "new heaven and earth" will be created)
