In the east, much of the Erie Lackawanna Railway remains, as commuter railroad routes in New Jersey (see NJ Transit), and as freight lines in New York (north of the last still-active passenger station at Port Jervis), Pennsylvania, and Ohio. West of Youngstown, Ohio, however, the route is gone, having been abandoned and removed before 1980 in favor of parallel former Penn Central lines. The former mainline between Hornell, NY, and Meadville, PA, is operated by Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad, through lease agreement with Norfolk Southern. The section of former mainline between Binghamton and Port Jervis, NY, is operated by Central New York Railroad, a subsidiary of the New York, Susquehanna & Western, through lease agreement with Norfolk Southern. Metro-North Railroad leases the section from Port Jervis to the state line at Suffern, NY. The former Northern Division is operated by the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad between Binghamton and Syracuse, while the Utica Branch from Chenango Forks to Utica is out-of-service due to washouts and little traffic.

The Erie Railroad merged with the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western in 1960 to form the Erie Lackawanna or EL. The EL survived until roughly 1972 when Hurricane Agnes ravaged the Northeast forcing the railroad into bankruptcy and it was folded into the government-created Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) in 1976 which began operations on April 1st of that year.

Of note the EL was once part of the Norfolk & Western Railway (held under the Dereco Corporation name) and had a chance to become part of the Chessie System after the 1972 bankruptcy but talks with the railroad's labor unions failed.
