This may sound strange: Watch children's movies and DVD's, Sesame Street, many other PBS shows "Between the Lions" is one that focuses on the written language/reading skills. Also check out books/stories from the children's section of the library. Nobody is going to think you are strange, they don't know why you are checking them out. They probably just think you have small children at home, or you're a teacher collecting supplies. The reason I suggest the "kid" study materials is because it is simple. It is meant to teach children in America how to speak English. It is a terrific place to practice at a slower pace. Once you are comfortable with the language (oral and written) then work your way up to the teen and adult materials. There is more slang in these, more dialects/accents that may be unfamiliar to you, so I would not start out with these. Start with the kid stuff.

So..
For a simple, step-by-step program that can help your child learn to read visit this site: http://readingprogram.toptips.org

Learning to read at a young age is important for the development of the child. It helps them develop a better understand of their surroundings, allows them to gather information from printed materials, and provides them with a wonderful source of entertainment when they read stories and rhymes. Children develop at different rates, and some children will develop reading skills quicker than other children; however, what's important is that as the parent, you are keenly aware of your child's maturity and reading level to provide them with appropriate books and activities to help them improve.

As parents, you are the most important teacher for your children.

Read as much in English as you can, and talk to lots of people. Reading and speaking another language as part of your everyday routine makes it much easier to improve your skill. And American guys will think your accent is hot, by the way, so that's always a plus!

Watch American or British television. Many people really improve their English this way.

Also, if you can find a job working with English speakers, many would be glad to help you!

Practice in your car with a tape. Listen to it at night when going to sleep. Patience, practice makes perfect, it won't happen over night. Italians have such nice accents, don't worry about getting rid of it altogether!

Listen to talk radio. It is very helpful to just listen to the English language and most people who are on the radio are highly educated. if you would like to be able to communicate like a well educated person start with NPR. good luck

I would just find a friend that is fluent in English and teach them italian while they are teaching you english. I find that interacting with others who know it helps learn a language better and faster.

Try reading alot and having friends talk to you alot and correct you if they know you said something wrong. Practice what you learned everyday until you can easily remember it or say it with out a problem.
