Frankly, they deserve everything they get what with the way they go about spreading their message of hate.

You may say freedom of speech but freedom of speech to do something which is profoundly offensive to the families of dead soldiers who have enough to be dealing with? Surely freedom of speech comes with the obligation to use that freedom in a RESPONSIBLE manner?!

Common decenecy dictates they just shouldn't do what they do (the WBC people) : if it comes down to it, they're nothing more than a bunch of heartless, vicious thugs.

Great news. I hope Matthew Shepherd's parents hear about this. They deserve something. Them, and many other people.

Well anything that bleeds funds out of the Westboro Baptists is fine by me, and I'm glad that the family of the soldier will receive at least some recompense for the insult done to his life and memory by these idiots. (Personally, I hope the soldier's parents go on to sue the Commander-in-Chief for the insult done to their son's life and dreams by prosecution of a highly dubious war, but that's just me).
The question of freedom of speech is an interesting one. We have laws here in the UK governing the use of free speech - one is not allowed to use it to incite racial hatred or violence for instance. I might support the idea that funerals are off-limits to public protests, because whatever the deceased may have done, their funeral is a time to reflect on their positive impact on those around them, not to make political or religious points.

YES! But do not continue to call them a church. I don't think HATE is supported under the First Amendment.
Don't confuse the Westboro Church with a Church. I support the TRUTH.

The word of God that I have learned doesn't teach us to hate. These people deserve the fine. The men and families that they are insulting gave the ultimate sacrifice and do not deserve to be subjected to the crap that these fundamentalist are doing.

there needs to be a definition of what constitutes freedom of speech and being down right rude and insulting at someones funeral....
they were not invited so it would be like a party crasher yelling fire at a party just to cause trouble...

Any time you see a sign that says, "God hates you," believe that it is not of the Lord, but it is a synogogue of Satan. Satan has creeped into this church and the people are demon possessed with depraved minds. Christians do not go around with signs saying "God hates you."
In the latter days these demons are creeping into the churches.

This so called "religion" is truly a "cult" and they are not imitating God or his Son. The bible says we are to love even our enemies and those who persecute us. Hate is not a Christian attribute. Satan continues to mislead people because he knows he has only a short time left in which to do so.

I agree with Adam G. The Nazi party can march in Chicago but this church cant campaign against the war? And so often Christians are attacked for supporting the war, but then this church opposes it and is sued.

I'm really mixed about this one...because...
1. I really don't like the idea of anybody picketing a funeral and saying all kinds of horrid things about this country...our soldiers...etc.
BUT.....
2. Is this kind of thing protected under the 1st amendment? Because as much as I don't like it...people have the right to say just about anything as long as it doesn't physically hurt anybody...
If we can't protect our freedom of speech, then our US Constitution is about as worthless as the paper it's printed on.....
Just my 2 cents....
