I can't afford the Canon 430EX but need an separate flash unit. I don't know who makes comparable flashes. Vivitar? Sunpak?

newworldvideodirect.com has the 430EX listed for $210.00 plus shipping.

IMO you should invest in this flash even if you have to wait until you save the money. Although there are some good after-market flash units, the 430EX was designed by Canon for its cameras.

I also suggest investing in an off-camera flash bracket. Check at your local camera store for various brands if Canon doesn't offer one.

I learned long ago that its better to have a feature and not need it than to need it and not have it.

How about Canon 220EX? But it head can't be moved like 430EX. Another option is to use Sunpak 383 auto flash, but without E-TTL, the exposure won't be as accurate as Canon flashes.
