on a Smith Machine than a standard bench?
My Max on the Smith Machine is 230 lbs., what would it be on a standard bench?

Id say the above answer is about accurate, I would take off about 40lbs from it to be around 190-195lbs. The problem with using a smith machine is you are not having to balance the weight at all. Thus eliminating a lot of your stabalizer muscles. I would recommend doing regular bench press as it permits or you have a spotter. You will benefit more from regular bench press. I will not use a smith machine for anything...kinda defeats the benefit of doing free weights.

there are many varieties of Smith Machines, I've seen at least 15 and they all feel different.

the only way to know is to find out. why are you even benching on the smith machine anyway. benching heavy on the Smith can lead to injury over time due to a condition called pattern overload. this is because machines only move in 2 of the 3 planes of motion.
