Constipation means that a person has three bowel movements or fewer in a week. The stool is hard and dry. Sometimes it is painful to pass. You may feel "draggy" and full.

Some people think they should have a bowel movement every day. That is not really true. There is no "right" number of bowel movements. Each person's body finds its own normal number of bowel movements. It depends on the food you eat, how much you exercise, and other things.

At one time or another, almost everyone gets constipated. In most cases, it lasts for a short time and is not serious. When you understand what causes constipation, you can take steps to prevent

Changing what you eat and drink and how much you exercise will help relieve and prevent constipation. Here are some steps you can take.

1. Eat more fiber.

High-Fiber Foods

Fruit such as apples,peaches raspberries; tangerines;

Vegetables: such as acorn squash, raw broccoli; raw brussel sprouts; raw cabbage, raw carrots; raw cauloiflower; cooked spinach; and raw Zucchini.

Breads such as , Cereals, and Beans such as Whole-grain cereal, cold (All-Bran, Total, Bran Flakes)
Whole-grain cereal, hot (oatmeal, Wheatena) Whole-wheat or 7-grain bread

Black-eyed peas, cooked
Kidney beans, cooked
Lima beans, cooked

2. Drink plenty of water and other liquids such as fruit and vegetable juices and clear soups.

Liquid helps keep the stool soft and easy to pass, so it's important to drink enough fluids. Try not to drink liquids that contain caffeine or alcohol. Caffeine and alcohol tend to dry out your digestive system.

3. Get enough exercise.
Regular exercise helps your digestive system stay active and healthy. You don't need to become a great athlete. A 20- to 30-minute walk every day may help.

Allow yourself enough time to have a bowel movement.
Sometimes we feel so hurried that we don't pay attention to our body's needs. Make sure you don't ignore the urge to have a bowel movement.

5. Use laxatives only if a doctor says you should.
Laxatives are medicines that will make you pass a stool. Most people who are mildly constipated do not need laxatives. However, if you are doing all the right things and you are still constipated, your doctor may recommend laxatives for a limited time.

Your doctor will tell you if you need a laxative and what type is best for you. Laxatives come in many forms: liquid, chewing gum, pills, and powder that you mix with water, for example.

6. Check with your doctor about any medicines you take.
Some medicines can cause constipation. They include calcium pills, pain pills with codeine in them, some antacids, iron pills, diuretics (water pills), and medicines for depression. If you take medicine for another problem, be sure to ask your doctor whether it could cause constipation.

Remember, the longer the stools stay in your colon, the more water is absorbed adding to the hardness. So, next time, try to evacuate it regularly. Constipation can cause you to have headaches and uneasy feelings; bloating; abdominal cramps.and pains.

For now, take some OTC MOM.or Dulcolax suppository. And that should do the trick. and you should get immediate results. Take some stool softener, like Colace . The other is to eat about 3 prunes followed with lots of fluids such as juice or water.

And if you're not squeamish at all; take a glove, and do a digital extraction. That should break up the turd into small pieces so you can pass them. Works everyttime when we deal with the elderly people who are severely constipated.

Just go to the store and get a gentle laxative. Ask the pharmacist, say you don't want one of those explosive "clean your system" ones, and he/she will recommend something that takes a little time (overnight, usually), but will help the problem without damage, and without pain. It's just constipation, and it normally clears up in a couple of days on its own. If you don't feel comfortable asking somebody, drink prune juice.
Whatever you do, do not strain too much too long. It will damage blood vessels, possible contribute to the start of hemmorhoids.

PepsiMaxDrinker, what kind of dictionary do you have? A cheap one? Don't tell people to educate themselves unless you know what you are talking about!
Constipation is blockage, diarhea is when you can't control the expulsion of waste.

Think of this as drying cement in a pipe, it's at the end but it just got too dry and hard, pouring water on it (in this case eating things) wont do much good, on the contrary, it will make the pipe full of water (food) and maybe even compress it together. The guy with a jackhammer in this case will be the doctor, it might cost a little, but what's more important, 50-75 bucks, or intestinal surgery?

EDIT People, please, EDUCATE yourselves before posting, constipation is when you cant STOP pooping, not when you cant poop.

You seem to have a bad case of constipation which can be caused by eating to much dry food such as breadrolls or pizza and not drinking enough liquids.
If you are really in bad pain maybe you should see your GP asap or if you are near to a hospital go and get something to shift it.You can make it worse by straining and end up with really painful lumps in your anus called haemorrhoids.Don't eat any more food, but drink plenty of water, preferably hot.

lack of fiber, but for a quick fix try a laxative...a good one.
One tip: This is usually used by pregnant woman who want to jump start there contractions. They use Castor Oil (not Castrol that is for cars) over the counter at any drug store. its a laxative that usually works within 2-3 hrs depending on how much you take. This cases dirahhea. As with any laxative, don't go to far from your bathroom because you'll be needing it soon, lol. good luck with your poop, lol.

Make sure you've drank plenty of water. Also, walking will help loosen anything that's in there. Also, don't push too hard, just sit on the throne and be patient. It may sound funny, but Dr. Pepper works for me. Something in it works as a laxative, and it's NOT drugs. Good luck.

you should try eating a lot of fruits every day
also, try some fiber supplements, such as fiber choice. it works really well for me and some other people i know who actually suggested it to me because i was having terrible stomachaches (bad enough to stay home from school occasionally) and i felt kind of like you're feeling
you can get Fiber Choice by where they sell Tums in the supermarket or walmart or shopko, i suggest getting the fiber + calcium ones and the cherry flavored ones
