The Bible is a collection of 66 books, written by over 40 authors during a 1500+ year period on three continents and three different languages.

It is divided into two major sections. One is called the Old Testament, and covers history from creation to shortly before the birth of Jesus.

The first five books are usually called the "books of Moses" because they cover events up through his lifetime, and much of the material was compiled by Moses himself.

It is followed by several history books which go from the death Moses to about 400 years before Jesus. These appeared to draw from records written by court scribes and others during that time, and edited into the form we know today sometime before 400 BC.

There are five poetry books, which include the popular books of Psalms, with the lyrics of the songs used by the Jews to worship God, and Proverbs which is a collection of wise sayings. They songs and sayings are by several authors. The earliest come from 1000 BC and the last from before 500 BC.

Following that are 16 books written buy different prophets. Again, the earlier wrote around 1000 BC, up to the last in the 500 BCs.

All of the books were complied into the form we know them today around 400 BC.

We have manuscripts of the Old Testament books which date back to at least 200 BC on all of the books, and some as early as the 400 BCs. Most come from a discovery of manuscripts known as the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Due to the fragile material used to make the manuscripts, almost nothing survives from before 400 BC.

The New Testament books were written between 48 and around 95 AD.

There are 13 letters written by the apostle Paul that most scholars agree were written between 48 AD and 67AD (when Paul died). In middle to later letters, he uses about 2 dozens phrases quoted from the gospel of Luke, which would indicate that Luke had to have existed by 60 AD.

There are four gospels, called Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It appears that Mark was the first written, because Luke repeats about 88% of Mark in his gospel, and Matthew repeats about 92% of Mark in his gospel. Both include a lot of new material also. This would indicate that, since Luke had to have existed by 60 AD, Mark was written earlier then that. Matthew also includes about 5% of the new material from Luke, indicating that it was written some time shortly after that.

John is unique and repeats almost nothing found in the other three gospels. He states that there were other things that Jesus said and did, and then he tells us about them. It appears he was familiar with the other three gospels, so he did not bother to repeat what they already told us. His gospel also includes lot of commentary about the meaning and importance of Jesus' sayings, which shows that the book was written much later - after the author had had a lifetime to come to understand those words. It appears to have been written around 95 AD. We have surviving fragments of a manuscript of John that scholars date between 110 and 115 AD, so it had to have existed before that.

The New Testament also includes the book of Acts (written by the author of Luke) which follows the history of the church up to the year 62 AD, when it appears the book was written.

Also additional letters by Peter, two of Jesus' brothers - James and Jude, the apostle John, and a letter by an unknown author called Hebrews.

Finally there is the book of Revelation, written by the apostle John around 95 AD.

The compilation of works by those who have studied the historicity of the bible through the centuries tell us that the bible was written:
1. Over a 1500 year span.
2. By more than 40 different authors
3. In 3 languages (Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek)
4. On 3 continents
5. In over 20 different countries
6. By men from all backgrounds (Poets, shepherds, kings, cup bearers, soldiers, philosophers, tax collector, historians, fishermen, and a physician to give you an idea).
7. In times of peace and war, trouble and triumph, joy and celebration, judgment and peril, just to name a few.
Most of all, it has one central theme, redemption of mankind.

I find it interesting that it is still the worldwide best seller with no close second. The worldwide bible societies have accounted for the printing of more than 3 billion (that's right, billion), copies of bibles, new testaments and portions of scripture since 1800.
Josh McDowell, who was an atheist in college who set out to disprove the Christian faith and its claims wrote all of his findings in a book entitled "The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict". It' about 2-3 inches thick. Most of what I quoted here is found in chapter one of that book. (By the way, Josh renounced atheism and is a devout Christian). Hopefully this answer was of some help. Hope you have a great night.

The Bible was written by not less than thirty-six authors over a period of about sixteen hundred years. But the important thing to remember is that these men wrote under the direct control of God. That makes this a God-inspired book. God guided them in writing the very words. This is what we mean by inspiration. The following Scriptures clearly teach that the Bible is inspired by God.

“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man, but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” 2 Peter 1:21. “A11 Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

Thus the Bible is the Word of God. Some would say that the Bible might contain the Word of God. This would imply that parts of it are inspired and parts are not. Who would know what is and what is not inspired? After many years of research and study, we are convinced that there is no human explanation for this book. This decision is not left to earthly opinions but rather as Psalm 119:89 says, “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in Heaven.”

Another important point to remember is that the Bible is the only written revelation, which God has given to man. In the Bible, God warns us three times against adding to the Bible or taking away from it, the last time being Revelation 22:18-19.

The stories and poems that came to be included in the Hebrew scriptures date from 1000 to 2000 BCE. The actual writing probably began some time after the fall of the Northern Israelite Kingdom in 722 BCE. Final editing of the Torah was done during the early restoration of the 5th Century BCE. The books known as the Prophets were probably complete by about 350 BCE and the last of the writings, although officially completed during the time of Ezra, probably date as late as the period of the Maccabees in the Second Century BCE.

There were different versions of the Torah in the Northern and Southern kingdoms that had to be reconciled. These accounts were supplemented by material produced by the priestly class and by a reform movement known as the Deuteronomists. Many scholars suspect that Ezra did the final editing after the Babylonian Exile.

The historical / prophetic books were composed by court historians, scribes and the prophets themselves. And the other writings came from a variety of sources, kings, dissidents and everyone in between.

The Christian scriptures were produced some time between 45 and 120 CE. Paul's letters to various churches were the oldest. Mark's gospel is from just before the fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE. Matthew and Luke/Acts date from the following decade and John's gospel was written between 90 and 100. Some of the later letters (1 & 2 Peter, 2 & 3 John, Jude, Revelation) may have been composed early in the Second Century. One can determine the sequence of composition by the increasingly sophisticated theology and Christology, very simple in Paul, very complex in John's gospel. The letters of Peter and John indicate a mature church organization dealing with administrative issues. And Revelation describes a period of persecution that is very similar to that of the Emperor Domitian, including a reference to the legend that he was a reincarnation of Nero.
