I recommend you visit your local shelter and take a bunch of dogs out on a leash for a test run. You might see the dog of your dreams and it might be a collie or a mixed breed.
You just might find another dalmatian that has the personality you remember.

Actually getting a dog should take some research. You want to find one that matches your lifestyle. You cannot go with what people here say cause they don't know how you live.
If you an active person, who runs, hikes, goes for walks a dog with a little more energy might be your type.
If you are out a lot you want a dog that will be ok alone.
If you are a bum who watches tv 24/7 you want a dog that will have a low energy level.
Don't also forget about living arrangements. A lot of apartments do not allow big dogs or any dogs. Many ban so called aggressive breeds. If you live with you parents thats fine, but will you be moving in the future? If so take that into consideration.
I would go to a shelter or animal rescue and do a 1 on 1 with some dogs. See what they have.
If you do a search you can get some websites that will tell you about the typical characteristics of dogs and the type of life style they'll fit. best of luck and hopefully you'll find a great friend for the next 15 years.

I'd check with your local shelter and save a life.
There are dog breed quizzes you can take to help you determine which breed is best for you, based on your lifestyle, activity level, allergies, house or apt., etc.
If you like to run bicycle etc you might consider a weimaraner, they are high energy dogs that need a lot of exercise and are extremely intelligent. As a working (hunting) breed they do require stimulaion, perhaps an agility class.
Here's a breed finder quiz:

I as well think that you should visit a shelter and adopt a dog.. but i suggest the SCHNOODLE>. about 10 to 20 depends on the mom. IT is a cross between a mini poodle and mini shcnauzer.. the MOST hyperallergenic NON SHEDDING dog in the world.. smart and strong. you cna have them as lap dogs ro run them wokring out.. you make the dog. Great with kids and other dogs! THEY ARE GREAT!! LOOK them UP! NEW POPULAR BREED!

We had 2 golden retrievers a long time ago and they are beautiful dogs with great personalities. They are also very smart and usually easy to train. They are in the top ten dog breeds and are great family pets. In my opinion, I think these kind of dogs would be great for you. Good luck with finding the right dog!

Oh boy - this is certainly a matter of preference. My opinion (my name says it all) Shar-Pei are the BEST dogs. They are loyal, protective, great with kids and other pets, they don't shed a lot, they don't need a lot of grooming, and they are not RUNNERS! I hate that in a lot of breeds - you open the door, and wham - they are off!!! They are of medium build 50-60 llbs, 18-20 inches at the shoulder. They come in such an array of colors that there is bound to be one to please all...
This, of course, is MY CHOICE!!!

We have a black lab and she is the BEST. She is loyal, obediant and loving. She is a great companion, protector and we have a great time jogging together. She has never chewed on anything except her toys, does not bark unless something is wrong. She loves to play with my children and is patient with their rambunctiousness. A black lab is the way to go!!!

The perfect kind of dog for you is the boxer because they are medium in size and they are really playful. They like to be around children and they are in the working group.
