Two things to keep in mind
1. If you're standing, lean forward just a bit (just a bit, i said! don't bend at the waist or anything) this helps to make you look long and lean!
2. Turtle ;) This means to move your head forward like a turtle's coming out of a shell. This will help you to not look like you have a double chin.

Practice in the mirror a bit, or have a photo shoot with yourself if you have a digital camera. I think candid (random) pictures are the best, though.

This is a difficult question because it is not specific. Good poses change with age, size, gender, features and quantity of people in the picture as well as the purpose of the photo.

It all depends on the individual. Some people look better from one side or angle than another. Part of the fun is experimenting.

For the most part, I like shots that look as though they weren't posed.

umm... i usually just get the tallest at back, for friends, a usual jumble, for formal, the tallest on a table, the shorter ones standing near the tallest one and their arm around their shoulders and the shortest one sitting on a chair near the table.
