If you live near woods...it really could be just about anything that ate your cats, owls (would be able to take small cats or kittens), coyotes, dogs, foxes, etc. I would think a mammal predator would be more likely a culprit than an owl, especially if your cats were a good size. The cats also could have been poisoned, hit by a car, etc. etc. Hard to say exactly what happened being that there are so many dangers of being outdoors. They also could be hanging out at a neighbors house.

My guess is another predator and not an owl is doing in your cats. Probably a Coyote, Wolverine, or stray dog.
The afore mentioned animals are all opportunist killers, eating most anything available.
Barn Owls take small prey such as voles, mice and an occasional song bird. The other group of Owls into which the Gray Owl (wingspan=60") is grouped, can eat animals as big as a squirrel, but mostly consume mice and voles as well.
We keep Dogs weighing 90 pounds or more around and particularly herding breeds to keep away Coyotes because they are seen here, even in the daylight hours

Owls can and do do this. Young cats are smaller than skunks and rabbits, and these are both prey for owls. A great horned owl would have no problem taking a young, or even older cat as prey.
Barn owls have weak feet so they would not, and all the smaller owls would stick with small prey. Your two culprits would be the great horned owl or the gray owl, they're both very large birds and designed to grab and kill large prey.

An owl can catch and kill a cat, especially a small cat or a kitten. Have you ever watched the show Meerkat Manor on Animal Planet? I know those aren't housecats but they are about the same size (maybe a little smaller) and the owl is one of their worst enemies. If you get any more cats, you should make them indoor cats to prevent this from happening again.

Yes, but are you sure it was an owl. Great horned owls are big and this bird could not have had adult feathers and had been a horned owl. Why are you letting a declawed cat outside in the first place?

most probably they just ran off you see in this case the cat is the predator not the owl, and i dont think an owl can lift a cat an then take away and kill. just make sure next time to have the cats in a small place while they still joung
