My grandpa's pomeranian has been with us since the summer. He's breath smells so bad. No joke, it is the worst thing I have ever smelled. It smells a little like poop and or rotten eggs. He's pretty old and has a habit of licking his poop when he's out side. We give him breath fresheners (Pedigree breath busters) but it's not working. Some times he sleeps under my bed and his breath wakes me up. And he licks himself ALOT. Whenever he's laying down he has to lick his paws. He'll lay down by the couch and you have to tell him to leave because him just laying near you is too much too bear. He's a good dog and doesn't have too many other probelms but his breath is just uhh. Any help or advice is greatly apreciated. THANKS!

The most common cause of bad breath in dogs is dental disease. Poms and other small breed dogs seem to be particularly prone to it. Best thing to do is get him checked over by a vet and if need be, have them clean his teeth. As he is an old dog, it is a good idea to have a pre-anaesthetic blood test done prior to check his general health, and more specifically, that of his liver and kidneys. This would be a reasonable idea anyway, as things like liver and kidney disease can also cause bad breath (although the dog would normally appear sick by the time its showing signs like that).

With his paw licking, it could be an allergy but many dogs become habitual foot chewers (again, especially small breed dogs) and it is a very had habit to break. This could however also be contributing to his bad smell.

If it's down to his teeth, and you get them cleaned, you need to do what you can at home to minimise the tartar building up again. You can try cleaning his teeth with a finger brush and dog toothpaste (don't use human stuff), although given his age, he mightn't take too well to this. If he will eat bones (RAW), that's fantastic- something like a raw chicken wing or a lamb shank should be okay for a dog his size. If he won't chew (and some dogs won't) you can consider trying the Hills t/d diet, which can be very effective in minimising tartar buildup on the teeth (provided that they're either in good condition or have been cleaned before starting on the diet).

My Dogs Breath Stinks

Your dog's breath stinks because he does not get his teeth brushed and has had years and years of tartar and bacteria to build up on them.

He may also have a rotten tooth that needs to be taken out-my cousin's cat that she adopted had HORRIBLE breath and it was because of the rotten tooth.

Take him to the vet to have him checked out.

Take him to a vet. He might have periodonal disease. Also check his gums if they are right color. If that's not a problem than as someone else mentioned, brushing would be a good idea. But once again, since his breath smells -there must be bacteria in his mouth causing odor.

I echo CB's suggestion - bring your dog to a vet and have his teeth cleaned.

It's not unusual for dogs to suffer from dental diseases, just like people do. And boy do rotting teeth stink!!

It could be that your dog has a serious problem, but more than likely it is just the food you feed him or if you live on the farm, a few of the other things that may be laying around on the ground in the cowyard.
Also you may be interested in knowing what NOT to feed your pet. I will give you the address of a very informative site that list the dangerous foods that can harm your dog.

Brush, wash, brush. When washing use shampoo, & once done make sure you let him dry before you let him outside again. If that doesnt work talk to the vet or a groomer. good luck! :) (BTW before you take him to the vet or groomer you might want to research it, I'm sure there has to be some websites out there dedicated to this kind of stuff)

Have his teeth cleaned by the vet. After that brush them daily! Not only will it help his breath but will add time to his life if they are not too far gone.

His teeth may be in bad shape because poms can get bad teeth at a pretty young age if they are not taken care of properly.
Please do not let this problem go because if he does have bad teeth then that can lead to infections and organ damage.
