Rescues and no kill shelters are much better options than a free to a good home. Start contacting them now because they may have waiting lists of other dogs in kill shelters that are literally dying to get in.
Your dog needs to be up to date on all shots, spayed or neutered, on heartworm medication, and you may want to consider offering to make a donation to the rescue or shelter for his care.
Those organizations will find him a great home but as I said, they have waiting lists so you need to get started now. Search petfinder and limit your search by your zip code. Write and call every shelter within 25 miles.
If that doesn't get any results within a day or so, try 50. I know that's a lot of shelters but you have to understand they are staffed by volunteers and it may take time to get back to you. You are running short of time so the sooner you get started and the more places you contact, the better chance your dog has.

Where are you located? You may have more options than you think. What breed is he? It is possible that you have a breed specific rescue nearby, and those dogs are more likely to find a home than a shelter dog.
NEVER offer a dog as "free". This attracts all sorts of terrible people, such as animal testers and dog fighters.

I agree w paganmom no kill shelters if you have them or try to
find programs that train the dogs as companions for the handicapped, blind, disabled, and elderly. If your dog is young and well behaved like you say some places look for these dogs to train! Try to google it...

Well, you should probably take him/her to the shelter; she may still have a good chance of being adopted if he/she is good with children.
