Yesterday my mail delivery woman-********* ran over my dog!!!! Let me start with saying....I live in the country. Our House is 1 mile away from the main road. Our Driveway is a gravel one lane path. There are only 2 houses on the property besides mine.
I was standing outside with my dogs when she did it!!! Everyday she goes by my house easily going 30 mph (on a gravel rd).
I live outside the city limits so there is not a leash law.
It could have been avoided had she cared or gone slower. Her excuse was "most dogs run after me not infront of me"!!
The post master is telling me they cannot be held responsible for vet bills.
Has anyone had something like this happen to them or anyone u know?
I have two dogs. My husband and I have been married for barely 2 years...these are our children. They're indoor dogs, we just let them out to potty but we always stand outside with them.
any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks for all the good answers so far.
I live in NC.
It's privately owned.
I don't see why I should keep my dog on a leash on a property that easily has 4-5 acres of land. Plus they were not outside by themselves....I was trying to get her because I saw how fast she was going by.

T4...I like that...too bad I've done that already...when we first moved there the girl that lived there before we did was subscribed to all kinds of junk mail so I would put "return to sender" and the ***** circles "or current resident" and leaves it in my mailbox.

You can do two things one you can put up an electric fence so the dogs cant get run over and you can sew the mail lady

Sorry to say you are not going to like my answer. It was your fault, your dog was not in your control or it would have not been chasing the mail truck. I had the same thing happen to me. I had a delivery of lumber for the barn I was building and my dumb dog went chasing the truck and got run over. I told the guy where to put the lumber and took off to the vet with my dog. He survived.
I like you lived in the country on a long gravel road, 12 acres. It was a steep road and you had to keep up your speed to not get stuck, you cannot get going again on a steep gravel road if you stop. I did not blame the truck driver, it was my fault for not keeping the dog in control. My other two dogs did not have the habit of chasing cars so they were OK.
The post master is right. It is up to you to control your dogs.
Post a sign on your property that "Speed Limit 5 MPH". Better yet get a post office box and stop the mail delivery.

I am sorry to hear of your accident. Although living in the country is very inticing to allow your dog to roam leash free it could have been avoided if it had been on a leash. I do however think your mail carrier should have been a bit more empathetic. I would probably contact an attorney for legal advice for medical bills. The postal service should have to pay for the damages. I know that most carriers do have problems being chased whether this was the case or not....they should be held responsible as well. I hope in the future you will keep your dogs on a leash to avoid this ever happening again. I hope your dog recovers well.

I think you can file a complaint against the city or the post office. She was driving her vehicle recklessly on YOUR property. It wasn't like she was on the main road. I would definetly do that and save all the vet bills and time you had to take off from work to take care of your pet.. What if it had been a child that "jumped" into the road? All the best good luck

No, they can't (unfortunatley) be held accountable b/c they will blame it on you and say it was your fault for letting the dog get close to the delivery truck! It sucks but they don't really care what they do. My mailman ran over my neighbors dog and didn't even stop. the next day my neighbor confronted her and the mail lady said "I thoguth the dog was a stray and why was your dog outside anyway!" they are pretty snobby about stuff like that! Sorry about your puppy! :(

Okay this takes some creative thinking. How about marking every unwanted piece of mail especially junk mail REFUSED RETURN TO SENDER. That ought to keep her busy.

No one on here has any idea what the laws are where you live, but it might be worth your while to find out.
Is it a private road?? or county owned?? Could make a big difference.
I could tell you what the laws are here, but what difference would that make.
