My 13 week old springer (who has had 3 sets of shots already) has a runny stool. When I got him he on Purina? but I changed it (over 3 weeks) to Wellness. This is the fifth day on Wellness only. And at puppy school they did give him a new treat he's never had (3 days ago).Yesterday he had a solid poop but at the end it was like pudding. Today his stool is runnier - no blood - but he did vomit yesterday (grass in it). He isn't lethargic and he is drinkin/eating. Lastnight he did hide under my bed for a while but was coaxed out with a small piece of kibble. One more thing, the vet recommended Virbac Enzyme oral hygiene chews (he is bored with toys) and he has been chewing those. He seems to be straining a little when he poops as well. I am going to take the kibble away and try some white rice - and have read tha Wellness sometimes causes this. Any advice?

He has never had milk. I am not always switching his food - just once because he was eating cheap food - that people on here told me to change. Can someone who can read please help.

This is for natc - he has not had diarrhea for 5 days - if you read the question - it's since yesterday. This is supposed to be a forum for constructive advice, and I am finding that less and less. I have never had a dog but I can tell every one of you implying that I am not a responsible pet owner, that my puppy is very well taken care of. He has pudding like poop - the vet knows and he will be taken there if his poop is not normal tomorrow. I have paid over 1000.00 to care ofr him when he had a parasite 3 weeks ago, and I would pay 1000.00 more. If you don't have advice to give, then don't answer - simple as that.

my border terrier went through this "stage"as well, our vet recommended white rice with a small amount of boiled chicken pieces mixed in.
this worked .also anything "bland" -such as scrambled egg (but without milk !) plain pasta.
these things do work!
also we were told the "purina" was a bit too rich at this young age ,but to try asda'a own dry puppy food (walmart's")after the short diet listed above --- we were told never give a dog milk or dairy products .. only thing safe for them was natural yoghurt .
besides the good advice about dehydration mentioned above you must also watch that he is sleeping well ,as a lack of sleep can be fatal in dogs! (very important) "ARCHIE" is now 7 months old and 110% healthy, full of life and very happy !
sincerely wish you all the best success with your springer !...... ps: excellent dog !

you should check with breeder and ask when the last deworming of the pup was and if over 2 wks. since last worming ,you should reworm the pup. Also check to see if it has had any vaccinations against Parvo virus and if not see your vet.Remove its drinking water and replace it with the baby non - flavored pediolyte, this will replace any electrolytes it has lost during runny stool and keep it from dehydrating.also give it a dab of plain honey or Karo syrup on its tongue to elevate its sugar level which is probably low.you can also give the pet about 1/3 teaspoon of Pepto Bismol every 4 to 6 hrs. for the diarrhea.Try boiling some chicken, cut into small pieces, put in blender with small amount of water and puree it,this will help settle the stomach. If none of the above helps see your vet,as a small pup will get very weak if the diarrhea problem isn't corrected.

He is definetly showing signs of not feeling well let alone the other obvious issues. There can be a number of things going on and your observation is very important. If it continues another day , make sure he isnt getting dehydrated. Take a pinch of his skin , even on his leg--if it doesnt snap back right away and if his gums are pale I would get him to the vet right away.
If this isnt happening , it could be just puppy growth and getting used to the different things he is putting into his tummy. He hasnt built up a tolerance to these things and some adjust bettter than others.
Dont give him rawhide or pigs ears or anything like that. Give him a variety of textures like rope with rubber rings on them, and porky pines and such. Make sure he has some soft stuff as well as hard rubber to get through his teething stage.
RIce is good , add some ground chicken to it for some protien.
I always spent crazy money buying the most expensive dog food until one of my trainers pointed out to me the list of ingredients on them . Purina makes different kinds and I have no issue with them at all anymore. Maybe consider swiching back.
good luck and keep it up. you are being a good dad!

Make sure the pup is not dehydrated. My vet told me to feel the dog's gums. If they are gummy and not moist, chances are he needs fluids. Also, my vet informed me dogs tend to foam at the mouth and drool more than usual when they feel nauseated. Many things could be making him feel icky and it is very important to get him to the vet if necessary.

If you don't think is it necessary, try feeding him some rice and hamburger. After cooking the hamburger in a skillet, add it to boiling water to get most of the grease out. Strain it and add it the cooked rice (another tip from the vet).

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I would recommend giving him rice & boiled chicken for a few days then slowing introducing his regular food. I would stop the chews also during this time. They may be part of the cause. My dogs love to play with rubber balls and ropes. I have also given them the teething chew toy to play with.

You went from a medium protein to a high protein food he is probably reacting to the food , rice would be good but you should consult your vet. puppies only need a couple days of loose stools to get extremely dehydrated.

5 days is too long to leave him, he should be at the vet by now, he can become dehydrates which is BAD, get him treated, then to change food you need to wean him off old bag and on to new bag, mixing alittle of both, rule of thumb for diarrhea or vomiting, is fast for 24 hours, water only, if it continues go to vet, you are 4 days over due a vet visit.

It could be the type of Wellness. You know how they have different flavors? Animals can have food allergies. Maybe there is a type of food the that particular flavor that your puppy is having problems with.

I suggest trying a different flavor and see what happens.
Then if he still has irregular stool.....contact the vet.

Good luck

purina sucks. glad you got him off that.
since it's been only 5 days since switching, his stomach is just trying to adjust to the new food. give it another week. something that worked for us was pure pumpkin. not pumpkin pie mix but PURE PUMPKIN. that stiffened up his stools right away. just mix a spoonful in with his kibble.

good luck!

It was the change in diet, he's nervous, and hides, because he senses your anxiety. Don't keep switching his food. The rice will be fine. try some Pedialite, for infants, and I bet he'll be fine tomorrow.
