I bake cakes all the time for get-togethers. If the majority of the people who are going to be eating it are older people, they will only want a small piece of cake. A sheetcake will generally serve about 12 pieces - nice sized. And that's with one box of cake. If you know they want small pieces, you can cut it into 5 pieces the long way and 3 pieces the short way for a total of 15 so, see, either way, you'll need two pans.
If you want a nice cake - light - to top off a heavy meal - that your grandmother would like, take a boxed yellow or white cake mix, replace some of the water in the instructions with the juice from a can of pears. Use all the ingredients called for on the box. Puree just a little - you still want some pieces - of the pears and add a little over half of the pears to the cake mix after it's all mixed. Mix it one last time to mix in the pears. Bake it in a sprayed sheetcake pan on 350º for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick tests clean. Take the rest of the ground pears, place it in a skillet along with whatever juice was in the blender, and heat a little. Add sifted powdered sugar until it's still a little watery but not much. Poke holes in the cake with a meat thermometer and pour the powdered sugar mixture over the cake. Cool completely. You can either serve it that way or top it with Cool Whip and put your birthday decoration on top. It makes a very moist cake that your grandmother should love.
So, in a nutshell, 2 boxes of cake mix, 2 cans of pears if using my recipe, 2 sheetcake pans. You can purchase those throw-away aluminum pans to use also if you'd like. But check the cake sooner because the pans are thinner than the regular ones and the cake may be done sooner.
Whatever cake is left over, I'm sure you'll have people who would like to take a piece home.
Enjoy!

One box of cake mix will not feed 20 people. On average, one 2 layer cake serves about 8 average slices. So, if you are feeding 20, you should have at least 2 cakes or 3 to be on the safe side. How bad would it be if someone didn't get cake?
Since there isn't a regular pan that would serve 20, you should just follow the directions on the box and either make the two layer or one layer sheet cake and do them individually. Or, you could just do cup cakes and one cake that has writing for your grandma. That would be cool too.
Whatever you decide, make sure that you take enough to feed everyone.
You should figure one can of frosting for each box of cake mix you use.

24 serving cake
INGREDIENTS
2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS
For a Yellow Cake: Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Cut in shortening until fine crumbs are formed. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla. Beat at low speed for 1 minute, then high for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl frequently.
Pour batter into greased and floured 9x13 inch pan. Bake in preheated 350 degree F oven (175 degrees C) for 25 to 30 minutes.
Variation for a White Cake: Prepare as for the basic cake except use 3 egg whites for the 2 whole eggs. Whites may be beaten separately and added for a lighter cake.
Variation for a Chocolate Cake: Add 1/4 cup cocoa powder to the basic cake mix prior to adding the milk.
Variation for a Spice Cake: Add 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves, and 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice to the basic cake mix.

You just need one box (the 18.25 ounce size) of cake mix and one can of frosting. Bake in a 9x13" pan. That can be cut into 24 generous pieces by cutting into thirds the long way and into eight the other way.

You are probably peaking of a bread pan. They would be thick, so that would be equivalent to a regular square cake pan. Cook it the same way and check sooner with a tooth pick, if the toothpick comes out clean it is done. If it has mixing on it cook longer.
