I am doing this science project and I have to read to 1st and 2nd graders. How do I get them to listen to me?

Do it as though you were reading the script of a play during an audition. If that doesn't work, read anyway - it will sink in. They listen even when you don't think that they are. If they begin to squirm, stop at the end of a page and ask them what they think is going to happen (be engaging). Rehearse your reading beofrehand and think of something funny to say at the end of a passage. I'm sure you will do fine. Little kids love older kids and you will probably get plenty of their attention.

Speaking for myself who has babysat in her younger years, the key to keeping the attention on you, is be the book. First of all, don't keep your eyes on the page, make eye contact with the kids. Secondly, get into it. Face emotions for the different parts, maybe surprise them with different tones or loud-ness of your voice. Keep them on edge. It works.

It's all in the voice and facial expressions. Act excited, and engage the kids if you can. Peter, can you tell me what this is? Point to a planet. My husband (college level) asks coke questions. If you get it right, he'll buy you a coke. If it's okay in your ISD, you can toss a piece of candy to anyone who answers correctly.
