I am thinking about applying to become a cop. I would love to do detective work eventually but know you have to work as a cop first. Any thoughts/opinions on this line of work? I would be leaving the private sector of banking.

Start running every day, and building up your upper body strength.
Be prepared to work any hours, on weekends and holidays.
Also be prepared to lose a few friends, but you will make new and better ones, so don't worry.
It generally takes 3 to 5 years in the field as a patrol officer before you can take the Detectives exam.
Develop a thick skin, not only because you will need it around your co-workers, but because the criminals you come in contact with will try to get to you psychologically.
Good luck to you.

It can be the best job in the world, but it is not the same job as 20 years ago. Years ago people loved the police. Today there is alot of disrespect for police.

The police in big cities have it rougher then those in smaller towns. If you can get a position in a smaller town go for it. Sure, there is not as much crime, but I assure you, after about the 200th or so homicide victim it grows old pretty quick.

The best is when you help someone truly in need. The worse is when you have children as a victim.

Wow you are making a big change. First make sure that this is what you want to do. Pay is low and the job can be dangerous and hard.
You will work the beat for a year or two then you can be a detective. Keep in mind women are sometimes treated poorly in this line of work so be tough skinned.

Yes! Sounds interesting!! You could also just get your Private Investigator license instead of being a cop first.

Working as a cop, is pretty good job to get in, you never get bored, everyday is different, you help people in need, and the pay is good too. It is dangerous, you could get hurt, or killed.

Depending on where you are talking of working, the starting pay can be pretty good. I think Chicago starts in the $40,000. area, give or take, when you start the academy, then pretty quickly goes up from there, and great benefits.

The lights on the car, I think there pretty cool. Go through lights when you want. Speed when you want. I see it a lot. I thought of trying but never did. It was a dream job at one time.

To be a police man, you must have some college courses. You must also graduate from the police academy. Make sure you understand that it is dangerous, often thankless work.
