Angle and lightning. Mainly the way the light hits the subject of the photograph.
...
Okay, this is gonna sound real lame (and it is lame)...but you can have great lightning and the most expensive camera on the planet, but the picture can still be crappy.
You must (not should, MUST) have a sincere interest in the subject of the photo. If you don't, there wouldn't be...meh. This is hard to put into words. There wouldn't be...that...passion?
Yea, passion is the word. When you truly put your heart and soul into a pic, then when other people look at it, they get this warm fuzzy feeling...y'know?
Okay...you probably don't...but this is my advice anyways.

So many people have asked this question, and sometimes, I myself ask the same thing.
First off, you have to know the basics of your camera. ISO, aperture value, shutter speed, reciprocity, and so on.
Then you have to understand and excel in: Composition, rule of thirds, depth of field, texture, contrast, color, line, subject matter, poses, lighting, and a lot more. It's one thing to know what all of these mean, but it's another to actually use them well. This is what separates excellent photographers from just knowledgeable photographers.
On top of this all, you the photographer must have a good eye. Sometimes this just natural, but other times, it develops with schooling. Other times, getting a good shot is just luck. So, to get the best image possible, truly understand your camera, shooting methods, lighting, and where you are shooting. Add this all together, and there you go.

I would say great lighting, angles that bring out the best in what you are photographing. Bad photography is the opposite.

Lighting Lighting and Lighting
Then you have to get posing right... You have to be able to see the correct angel of the faces, that make people look the most flattering....
Then you have to worry about backdrops and props, and originality....
Then you have to worry about copping and creating original products that catch the eye......
there is a lot that goes into it.......
It doesn't hurt if you are a good sales person either... .

A subject, attention drawn to that subject, and simplification. Of course perfect focus and exposure as well.
