It's a good idea. You never know when you might be faced with chosing between paying a huge vet bill or euthanizing your pet.

Its a good idea in theory. I don't know that much about it. Or what they cover. I do know how ever some vets will give you a payment plane if something happens to your pet and you can not afford it.
I would look into it do some research. See if you think the coverage is really worth it. I have been blessed with a heathy smart dog she is 13 and still going strong only big expense was getting her teeth cleaned. She also is on pills for life for female incontinence. I have never had insurance and we have been fine. But I also use to work at a vets and get %50 off checkup and pills. That's the best.
Its worth considering.

if you are having doubts about it then set up a second bank account just for your dog. Put in about $50 a month that way if what ever reason something were to happen to your dog you would have the money. The insurance isn't necessary but it can be a good idea. You never know what your dog can A get into or B have happen to him/her. And surgrey for anything can be costly. So can medications. Hope this helps. :)

I looked into insurance and decided against it. What I did do was get quotes for my pets, this gave me what I'd pay a month for each them. Then I started a savings account for them. Each month I put in at minimum what I'd spend on the insurance premiums, usually a little more. This way I have money in case of an emergency, and it gains some interest as well.
Most pet insurance companies usually require you to pay the bill up front and they reimburse you later. So you'll still need up front money to cover an emergency anyway.

Mmm. I'm never sure.
PERSONALLY, I feel it can be a very expensive outlay....and, like all insurances, there is so many things they wont pay out for, and so many breeds that they are VERY expensive for.
What I do is put quite a bit of money away each month (I actually buy Premium Bonds)...that way, there is always a large aount of money building up with 'the dogs name on'...AND I have a monthly chance of winning a million! lol
I am in the very luscky posistion that I have no debt, other than my mortgage (no loans, no store cards, no catalogues etc), so IF my dogs NEED it, I would happily BORROW as much money as needed, if my Premium Bonds didn't cover it.
IF I DID have bad debt, or very little income, then I WOULD buy Insurance, no matter how much it was....I KNOW that sounds like I'm doing it the wrong way round, but it makes sense to me.

Either way, you'll be out some money, and you never know how much. With 6 kids of my own, I take the risk and don't get pet insurance, and just pay the vet bills as they come. I figure it may come out in the wash in the end and cost about the same. I've been lucky and never had much more than a broken leg and a kidney problem in my cats.

I myself don't have pet insurance but it would probably save you a lot of money in the long run dogs run into problems you do not anticipate like after my female yorkie had puppies she lost too much calcium and we had to take her to the vet, pet insurance would be helpful in situations like that and with a puppy you might want to get it and try it for a while you would ensure that it will stay healthy and not have to worry about coming up with much extra money.

IT REALLY DEPENDS, on your situation and research on.
For me, NOT feasible, too many animals of all ages,... mostly seniors.
[but I do get a discount fr. good vet for multi-animal household plus being an animal rescuer] So pay as I visit.
*Some pet insurers have lotsa "clauses" (what they'd pay and not), some have a high deductible and may not be worth it to claim for a pet's med. prob. should it arises coz then they'd shoot up the premium.
*Others make it very difficult to even approve a claim.
So be wary and do ask around,.. word of mouth, maybe from the vet is best.

My puppy is 11 months old, and I sure the heck wish that we would have gotten insurance prior to now. Between his shots, and getting him fixed, he's had an allergic reaction to 'something' (we don't know what) , then he had a yeast infection, then just last weekend he had blood in his stool. Between all those office visits and med's, it's close to $1K (if not more!!)
I'd recommend that you DO get it, as you never know what'll come up.

It is not necessary unless you have any unforeseen medical procedures that my come up. For example....a person can get by without personal insurance for doctor visits...but if you have to be hospitalized....you need major medical to cover expenses. Same with the dog...unless you have unlimited funds or a vet that allows you payment plans...
