I believe it originated in Wales. Many Welsh names like Robertson, Williamson, Richardson and Davidson were cut down to Roberts, Williams, Richards and Davids. The last corrupted into Davis. By the way St. Davis was the patron saint of Wales. Today Davis is pretty much a generic family name. For instance I have known many people who are Jewish or African-American who have had that family name.
Since I answered this I looked it up."Davis" is also English. A variation is "Davies".

Rootsweb(free site) has more than 1,600,000 entries in family trees for Davis. Just pull up the site and put Davis in the World Connect block. Once you come to the trees, if you see something that interest you, probe on a name and it will take you to a screen that will give you the name and email address of the submitter. Some submitters might not know too much as the Davis they have just might be someone who married into their family line, but some will.

Also, you have to be very careful not to take as absolute fact information seen in family trees on any website, free or paid. There are errors in family trees on websites. Even when you see the same information over and over by many different submitters, that does not mean it is correct. A lot of people copy without verifying. The information is submitted by folks like you and me and most is not documented.

The best way for you to know your family heritage is to trace your family starting with yourself and working back. Anytime you wish to do this, there are lots of good people on this board that can give you some great tips and advice.

Also since you are looking at a surname, be careful about the peddlers of surname products, like coats of arms (misnomer family crest). They do not belong to surnames and probably for a name like Davis, there might be 10 or more. Not everyone with the same surname has the same national origin or shares ancestors, even those of the same national origin.

In Wales, I believe. Along with Davies, David, Davidson, anything else David-related, really. It's a very common welsh surname.
