To avoid everybody trying to do the tax on the same day there is a window of + - 14 days. However there is a requirement to display a valid tax disc if on the public road and this does not have a grace period, especially if you are spotted by a jobsworth. After the 14 days DVLA will be thinking about penalties.

The car tax disc should always be current. The supposed 14 day period is not based on any law. Try explaining to the local Traffic Branch that you thought you had 14 days and they will advise you otherwise.

Take a look at :-

In Northern Ireland any car that is found by the clamping patrols to be "tax expired" can be clamped and impounded, even if it is only 24 hours out of date. The patrols can check on the car and have an answer within minutes, so there is no bluffing them.

You must re tax the car before the old disc runs out. Without current road tax you are uninsured.

What type of tax are you talking about? The vehicle registration? If so, you're subject to a ticket the day after it expires, in most places.

As long as it takes. If it's within 2 weeks there is no penalty to pay, after that there is, but in the mean time don't drive it or leave it parked on public right of way.
