Yes these are deductible medical expenses whether your insurance company will pay or not. You may deduct these expenses in the year you pay them.

Since you are anticipating an additional $13K over the $5K you have already incurred, you may want to bunch these payments into the same year. This is because you can deduct medical expenses only to the extent that they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.

In addition, you can deduct medical expenses only when you itemize your deductions on Schedule A. Another reason to make the bulk of your payments in the same year, even though you may have incurred them in a prior year.

Payment with a credit card or loan is considered payment of the medical expenses.

Yes, as a medical expense. You can only deduct it if you itemize, and can only deduct the portion of medical expenses that are over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.

Good luck. If you go for in vitro and you have to pay for it yourselves, see if you can find a shared risk program - in those, you get all or part of your money back if it's not successful. The cost is normally higher for shared risk though, but you get multiple tries - it beats paying that much for one try, then having it not work and wondering if just one more try for another $13K would work. And a personal note - I have almost-2-year-old twin grandsons through in vitro.

Yes, it is deductible as a medical expense. The usual 7.5% AGI limitation applies as it does to all unreimbursed medical expenses.
