Many states have min. wages set above the federal threshhold. Washington and Oregon do as I assume does California.

Federal is the minimum that employers can pay..they have no choice.. States will depend on the state u live in.. In MO it's a lot higher to live than here in AR so minimum wage is higher than the federal wages. Technically they dont' have to pay more than minimum wage.

Many states have minimum wages higher (or lower, KS is all of $2.65!) than the Federal minimum wage. If a state has a lower minimum wage, the Federal minimum will normally apply though there are rare exceptions to that.

The CA minumum is currently $7.50 per hour and will rise to $8.00 on 1/1/2008. The Federal minimum wage is currently $5.85.

Here's a link to all state minimum wages, compiled by the US Department of Labor: http://www.dol.gov/esa/minwage/america.htm

If a state does not have a minimum wage that's higher than the federal, then the federal is in effect in that state. Many states, including CA, do have a higher amount.
