Hi guys , I have few questions about this topic;
1- Can I relocate to another state & keep my ID and license plate on the vehicle without transfer the new state? If no, what’s going to happen?
2- What is the deal if I still have physical address and a house in the previous state?
3- Can I purchase new vehicle in a MI state (example) and get drive away plate to another state LA (example) without pay tax twice? I asked a dealer about that, and he said when you purchase the vehicle we will pay the tax right a way. In this case I will pay tax twice. In MI & LA.
4- If I transfer license plate on vehicle I already paid tax on it, to another state, and the MVD made me pay another state tax. Can I claim any of them in the tax return, and what state should be?

If the car is titled and registered in your name and you move to a new state you do NOT have to pay tax again. Sales tax is just that, SALES tax. However if the state where you purchased has no tax or a lower tax than the state you're going to you may have to pay the new state's tax or the difference between the two. That varies from state to state. When I was in the military I moved the title and registration on cars several times and Tax was never a question as long as the previous title and registration were in my name. I have known some people who had to pay when going from a non tax to a sales tax state though.

1 No. If you have moved to a new state you have to transfer your registration to the current state (usually within 6-8 weeks)
2 If your primary residence is still the previous state, then, no you do not need to transfer your vehicle registration.
3 Yes. Any new or used car dealer will issue a temp tag that is valid for up to 30 days. Most dealers will collect the sales tax at the time of purchase and note that on your paperwork. When you register the vehicle in your new state, you give them that paperwork and they will not charge you the tax again.
4 No. You cannot deduct sales tax for license plates on your tax return

The tax on the PURCHASE of a vehicle is paid in the state you bought it. To get a Title or transfer said vehicle to another state, you will be charged a TRANSFER fee by the new state. That amount differs by state.
Good luck, ;-)
