All cats are different and have their own way of vocalising to get our attention. They're clever enough to develop different meows to request specific things. You might enjoy reading the article Cat Chat, which explains all the different types of sound they make and what they mean.

When I got my cat and heard him meow for the first time in the middle of the night, I was also shocked. It was a very strange sound. But you'll get used to it like I did. There's nothing wrong with your cat, he has just his own unique meow.

Well when I first adopted my kitties and it was their first feeding time at my house, they very vocally meowed in anticipation..however--one went "meeeeeeeeeeyowwwwwwwwwww" and the other goes "mew". I was cracking up sooo bad. To this day, they still act the same exact way and have the same exact meow.
They also have another meow when I pet them. Sounds like they have an accent--they go something like "meeowww-ccchhhh"
LOL.
What can I say, cats are funny creatures :D

Your cat probably has some Siamese in it's history. My girl cat thinks she's from Paris or something. She doesn't say 'meow' either. The closest she gets is 'err.' Mostly she rolls R's around, like a Tribble.

Some cats just have different voices. Some "meow," some "rrroar" some "owwww." Your special kitty obviously has a special voice too! =^.^=

Normal - probably no problem at all. Try to get used to it, cuz if your cat is normal, you're going hear it A LOT.
My boy cat makes a "bow-wow-wow" sound that seriously does not belong to a cat. Normal.
My girl cat makes two sounds: a squeak (irritated) and the AAAO sound (triumphant killing of her pom pom toy, for which she wants to be praised). Normal.

They're all different! I have one who only goes whewww (like a little girl) or chortles. I have another who only whines. Maine Coons are known for just chirping- mine could only go ah-ah! (very cute) My other one just howls.
They each have their own voice!
