I have an 02' Dodge Neon ACR and was getting 30+ mpg as usual about a month ago but now I barely make it over 20. The dip happened after I changed my spark plugs and tires out. I have checked the new Champion copper plugs for correct gap and all is fine. The new tires are Yokohama AVID TRZ.

I never recieved a check engine light and have also recently changed the air filter and oil out. The car is manual so I haven't been shifting high or driving aggressively. I rarely use the AC and I check the tires twice a week for air pressure. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The new tires are same in size as the original but have a different speed rating (TR compared to the original HR).

the tires don't seem to be the issue here i think i would check the plugs again i did this to my wife's car and her mileage went way down,i had to change plugs in it again after about 1000 miles,it didn't run good on champions at all,our mileage went from about 30 down to 18,big drop i went up to a set of Bosch plugs and now I'm getting around 34 to the gallon,so i don't know if that will help you or not but it might, you might also want to have the computer scanned on it just to see if there's any trouble codes on it,they may also help you with finding it,hope you figure it out, that's big loss in mileage, good luck.

You need to check your oxygen sensor(s). Vehicles have 1 or 2. Unsure of how many the 2002 neon has. Sometimes this can cause a drop in gas mileage.

A sputter can be caused by bad plugs, plugs that are too cold, or plugs that are too hot. Also, cylinder compression could also be the culprit as well. Also, bad TPS or fuel pump or fuel filter could be at fault. On newer cars, it could be anything. Your check engine light will not come on unless an emission component fails.

Well I would start with replacing those cheap spark plugs with ngk. they arent that much more but they are very reliable. try doing a basic tuneup which includes distrbutor cap , rotor, spark plug wirers if damaged. If you don't get the answers you need from here go to a site that deals with just neons. I swear by this site. Past owner of a 04 neon sxt wannabe srt.

Nothing you listed should have caused any issues.

FYI the Neon engine does not have a distributor, cap or rotor.

Champion plugs are fine.

Does the car seem to be slowing faster when you coast? As suggested by another, check the brakes - especially parking brake cable.

What oil did you use? Even going from 5W30 to 20W50 should not make as much difference as you are seeing.

Check the torque on the lug nuts - did they over tighten them when installing the new tires, deforming the rotors or drums? - I had a shop do this once, and I even striped the lug wrench trying to loosen the lug nuts.

The only thing I can figure is the new tires. Nothing else would do it. Try upping the pressure a few lbs, see if that does it...... You're still buying gas at the same station, right?

Look at the decal on the hood it will give you the proper plug to use in the engine to have factory spec. more than likely your a victom of the interchange snafu from the parts store. your engine most likely wont run as well on copper u need patinum or IR. look at E3 plugs.

Try using some STP gas treatment and fuel and carburetor cleaner. Are the tires the same size?
