I have been on disability, I have not worked for 5 years. So, I have a huge gaping hole in my resume. DVR suggested that I use a summary type resume, and I have prepared one, but employers are wanting a detailed resume, and I don't really want to tell them that I have not been working if I can. If I do, I'm automatically disqualified because every single employer I've shared this with said they need RECENT EXPERIENCE. So I don't know what to do.
thanks

when they ask about it just explain your condition confidently and make sure they know that youll be the right person for the job anyway, its not about the resume, its about the interview! most of the time..

I had a similar problem recently. When they ask you about the gap in your employment history, just explain the situation as confidently as you can. Be sure to mention how the experiences that caused the gap and your experience during that period helped you to become a better person and how the experiences would make you a better employee. Focus on the strengths/positives and make sure to point out any volunteer work, etc. you may have done during that time.

I would just be honest about it. Even though it's hard to admit to a possible employer that you haven't worked for the past 5 years, it's a part of your life. Send your resume as you have it and put in there "disabled for 5 years due to disability" Professionals shouldn't frown upon that because it would be discrimination. Good luck!

If you can’t do it yourself and as far as on-line services go, I totally recommend Resume Rebuilders! I checked into a lot of these other services and they all wanted like over $300 to do what they did for $93.00! Saved me a ton of money and I can say that I never thought my experiences could look and sound so professional! Very friendly and very easy to work with! If you tell them you saw their advertising on Craigslist, they will give you a 50% discount! I think a resume alone costs only $60.00 from $100.00! I am sure they could develop a resume that could help with the gaps and so on. I received tons of callbacks after using my new resume. I definitely recommend them!

Be very honest with your resume... you shouldn't hide the truth especially with the 5-yerar-gap on your working status. If you can prove to your would be employer that you can do something worthwhile to the company... THAT would be the real reason to HIRE you!

Just be honest and explain your gap in employment is due to your disability. They say they need recent experience, but hey...they all say that! "Must have 5-7 years experience..." it's all a bunch of crap. Be honest and apply anyway.

Tell them you worked helping overcome disabilities as you understood your inner self and made a contribution to society, at this stage you don't need to tell them it was your disability unless you want to.
