good question, i had to look. miniDV is slightly smaller in size so would not fit the mechanism properly. However DAT tape is metal particle and DV is metal evaporate so they would not record the same. A pre-recorded miniDV would not play its audio in a DAT player for a number of reasons, the most obvious being the head speed for DV is much faster.

Not a chance. They are completely different, but a similar size.
