Why do people think that being gay or abortion is a bigger deal than, say, judging people or not helping your neighbors or being covetous and greedy?

Because it is. There are some sins that God calls an abomination - that is a stronger word than "wicked" or "sinful". God "ranks" sin in that regard. So if God says homosexuality is an abomination (which He does), I believe Him and I won't say otherwise.

Can you not see how ripping apart an unborn baby or fetus is worse than coveting??

First of:
The act itself is not the sin. Rather the choice is the sin. Even though we have free will there are consequences. The list of sins actually warns us of the possible consequences of our choices. It is like warning children not to do drugs or drink and drive, sure it can be fun but the consequences aren't.

Some things can be very damaging to our spiritual life to such a degree that they can become our masters instead of the Lord. These are called deadly sins since they stop me from being an active member of the body of God on earth. Other actions are damaging but not to such an extent and are considered minor sins. These can collectively also mess you up but are individually less powerful as a bad influence.

Treat the list of sins as a manual on how to be a good human. I don't believe you have to follow any manual to the letter to be succesful, but you stand a better chance if you read the manual and an even better one if you actually follow it.

If we were truely so obedient we wouldn't be on Earth in the first place so understand your own impulse to disobey and rebel and try to change this rather than terrorising yourself and others into obedience. We need to learn and therefore to make good and bad choices as long as we try to learn nothing is wasted.

Being gay is a sin. not a "worse" sin, just as murdering your unborn child is a sin... these are just temptations, in almost everyone's life. As one person is called "gay" because he gave in to temptation, perhaps another person is struggling with sin in a different area. It is no harder for this person here to deal with sin than that person there, unless God is helping you.

A lot of people say that gays are worse than everyone else and will go to hell because of their sin. that may sometimes be the case, but being "gay" and being a sinner are the same. They both go to hell unless they are saved and begin to fight their sin.

One of the people who commented before me thinks that you sin and become a sinner. That is not true; humans sin because they are sinners. It is their nature..
They sin becuse they're sinners, not sinners because they sin.

A dog does not become a dog because it barks. It barks because it is a dog.

People don't rank sins. God does.

Some acts committed are worse than others. It's logical.

And by the way, don't forget that lust AND greed are deadly sins so obviously God does feel that greed is just as bad as some sexual sins.

Catholic Church calls sins venial or mortal depending on their gravity. According to the Bible, there are sins which kill the spiritual life of the soul and deprive a person of salvation, unless he repents. These have been termed "mortal sins."

I think that rule was made by the Catholics, not Christians so I'm not entirely sure why?

Also, When Jesus said to the people "Who has not sinned may throw the first stones" the people left one by one dropping the stones because they had sinned in their life before.

This tells us that our sins are just as ugly as anyone's else.

There is no rank, sin is sin and we really are guilty of it.

So at the end of the season the number 1 and number 2 sins can play for the championship.
