I don't particularly care for the PT's. Just personal preference. The Hundai's Seem to be getting to be pretty good cars, but not sure about an '02. German cars are too durn expensive to repair when they break, for my taste. I don't really know anything about that model Chevy but personally would take a 2 year old car over an older one under most conditions. As for the Land Rover, I haven't seen a British car yet that was reliable. They have a propensity for breaking down at the worst times.

PT Cruiser- Best price out all of them, Cheep Interior, Build Quality is horrible and fit and finish is worse.
Hyundai Santa Fe- Still under Warranty, Built Well, slow, never noticed
VW Passat- Euro Styling, amazing build quality, fit and finish is top notch
Chevy HHR- Good Build Quality, Looks Better than PT Cruiser, Fit and Finish is Good for its class, Transmition is ancient!
Land Rover Freelander- STAY AWAY!! There is a reason this looks so much like deal, most of them are lemons and die around 60000 miles.
Out of all of them, I would go for the HHR because it is the best value, that is followed by the passat

VW all the way. I don't like the other cars on the list. I'm more of a Mitsubishi and Honda fan, owned an Eclipse and now a Lancer.
VW because of the reliability. Yes it could get expensive for maintenance and repairs, but that's what we pay for, foreign cars needing foreign parts. Always take good care of your car and do routine check-ups.

stay away from used German(passatt) and English(land rover) cars, also the Korean's. European cars are expensive in parts and services. A Huyndai is a Huyndai(bland). I would buy a brand new Japanese or an American car because I won't have to worry about reliability for at least 5 years. with a used car, You'll never know what's going to happen.

I would go with the Passat. Its probably the most reliable in that group. I would not get a PT cruiser. The car is ugly and i've heard its not a good car.

Japanese can't be beat for reliability,I don't know the particular model as it probably goes under a different name here.
I had a Passat. Great car, reliable, very, very roomy, typical German build, but expensive for parts, expensive on juice and quite expensive insurance wise
